We are offering a paid training opportunity to spend the coming winter in the Arctic Norway with more than 100 sled dogs in a tourist company, learning everything about these wonderful creatures and what it means to be a sled dog guide. Our promise is that you will have a great time here, and that we teach you all you need to be able to work as a sled dog guide anywhere in the North.

(With this being a contracted and paid position, we need you to be either an EU citizen or have your Norwegian working visa sorted in order to be employed legally. We would also encourage you to be committed to stay from the middle of October until the end of March.)

A little about us: we are a company that is providing winter dogsledding tours in our two kennels of around 150 dogs, operating in a quite remote area that is still close to Tromsø, Norway, in Ramfjordbotn. What we aim for in general is to have one more person in our small, close-knit international team who has an affection towards dogs, is a nice and helpful and kind person that likes to smile and make other people smile, and has an interest in outdoor life above the Arctic Circle. Yes, we are involved in tourism, and we try our best to do it the right, sustainable (we are proudly Eco-Lighthouse certified) and respectful way, so that it keeps being fun for everybody involved, no matter the amount of legs they have.

A little about you: you don't need any experience with sled dogs, but it sure helps if you are happy among them in general, and are a fast learner who can embrace constant change and irregularity (both in weather and in everyday operations), take frequent early failure as a step towards learning, are always cool under pressure, plucky, and very adept at handling problems in a swift and expeditious manner. But most importantly be a nice, kind, patient, honest, trustworthy, curious person.

The camp in which we look help for is located in Breivikeidet, about 50 minutes from Tromsø, where the colds are not so cold (we rarely end up below -25C that is) and the circumstances not so rustic, so it's a great place if you want to carefully dip your toes into the Arctic life.

As mentioned, we need you to be either an EU citizen or have your Norwegian working visa in order to be employed legally. We would also encourage you to be committed to stay for the whole winter season, because there's a lot to learn and there's not much point in leaving exactly when you would start to get to know the place, the dogs, the people and to actually know what you are doing. And we expect a genuine care and a sense of responsibility towards our dogs, our guests and also each other, to make sure everyone involved has a great time.

Our team right now consists of Norwegian, German, Hungarian, Slovenian, Finnish, Slovakian and Spanish people and more, so yes, you'll meet a lot of people with a lot of different life stories - what brings us to the Arctic is different for everyone. What you'll technically learn is mostly described above, but you'll also learn a lot about our wonderful animals, and hopefully just as much about yourself and what you are capable of once you are stepping out of your comfort zone - and we will be there to help you make it a great experience.

We are looking for one more person in our team of dogsledding handlers and guides, who take the utmost care of our more than 100 Alaskan huskies, and make sure our guests have a great time on their dogsledding adventures as well.

Your workdays (40 hours of work per week) will consist of feeding the dogs, cleaning the camp, getting the sleds and the equipment ready for our dogsledding tours, and helping out with everything that can happen in a kennel. You'll join plenty of the dogsledding tours, learning what a guide does and how, with an eye on being able to guide your own tours as well. You talk to our guests, educate them about the dogs and Arctic life in general, and help them have the greatest day of their lives.

But more importantly you will have a chance to build honest and meaningful relationships with the other people here and the dogs, and learn a ton while having a great time in a great place with good-natured colleagues. At the end of every day you'll be tired - but the good tired.

You'll have your own room in a shared house in the camp, with two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room - so showers, warm waters, wifi.

It's best to get to the nearest town every once in a while to stock up your food supplies, so you can either cook for yourself or join forces with the others to experience the different styles. Just remember to be patient and accepting so as to get along nicely with everyone - it's much nicer in the dark winter days that way.

Our kennel is situated in a lovely, picturesque valley. Apart from the surrounding mountains with opportunities to do most slopeside sports if you are not afraid of a little upwards climb first, Breivikeidet also has a small beach by walking distance. Public transportation is scarce, but in tourist season we have buses going back and forth between the camps and Tromsø city, and there are numerous great hiking spots as well in both areas. As long as you like nature, you won't be bored.
