Description
Hello beautiful people out there!
I am Tomke, 21, currently living in a small town in northern Germany together in a house with some other people who love to go for a swim in the lake, make music or cook together, do a looot of dance break sessions during learning…because oh, yeah, I almost forgot, we are there for studying :)
I am studying Environmental and Sustainability Studies and Educational Sciences which allows me to understand the complex problems in our world but can also be very frustrating sometimes. This transdisciplinary approach in an academic context supported what I already learned during my travels and transported into my daily life: People from all different areas, with all different experiences, knowledge and languages need to connect and exchange to have a broader perspective and learn from each other. During my travels, for example when helping on a coffee farm, teaching people English or French, learning about their culture, their work, the inequalities, both sides could learn from each other and I was able to reflect my own perspective, my origin and privileges. That’s why I love workaway as an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone, try new things and learn from each other.
In my daily life, I enjoy having the nature nearby, going on bike trips, sleeping in tents or hammocks, swimming in a lake every morning or visiting and helping my grandma in her garden- my wish is to plant my own veggies there. Therefore I would love to learn more about gardening and permaculture! Especially, because I sometimes miss the practical parts and going-into-depth in my study program. I’m still trying to find out how to use that knowledge for my daily & later life- where and how I want to life, as I wish to develop a (self-) sustainable lifestyle and want to life in and connected to nature, in community- which is difficult sometimes in a technological, „modern“, individualised and globalised world…
I found a new passion in dancing Contact Improvisation, where I learn a lot about my body and connecting with other people and how to get rid of social norms, judgements, right& wrong, beautiful&ugly and my perfectionism. I am able to explore and express my body and its emotions freely and I would love to do that with other kinds of art as well. I try myself in painting sometimes but there I’m still too critical with myself. What I really enjoy doing is upcycling clothes with my sewing machine, where I can get lost in creativity for many many hours, sometimes.
In general, I love painting walls (and helping with renovations). I did it in almost every room in my parents house, in my own room I try different colours and paintings and I’m always down to help friends or workaway hosts :))
I also enjoy writing and reading and I mostly can’t resist to dance and sing when music is turned on loud.
I would love to learn to play some more instruments, which I unfortunately didn’t continue to do as a kid. But its never too late to learn smth new:) and the jam session with my flat mates & friends are always fun
If I asked friends& family how they’d describe me, they say: spontaneous, sensitive, empathetic, ambitious, hands-on.
My favourite place is the ocean, being in and under the water is where I feel safe and home.
I love hammocks, walking barefoot, finding nice stuff in the bulky waste hihih and muddy hands when working hard. I like art exhibitions and busk and in general, seeing people do what they love to do.
Peace and love,

More details about your skills
I would say a good skill of mine is, that I’m eager to try out new things, learn from others and my family&friends always say that I’m very ambitious. Indon’t hesitate to work with machines and other tools. Even if I’m not perfectly skilled at something (I mean, who/what is perfect?:)… I’ve already tried and learned a lot of things, especially during my travels: I helped building stone pathways, bamboo houses, furniture out of wood or a house out of natural materials (clay, glass bottles as windows etc) and even renovated and painted a whole house and an 11m-campervan. (By the way, I love painting walls!!!) and I always enjoyed including my creativity in those projects. I do some gardening weekly at my grandmas garden but want to exceed my knowledge in that, especially in permaculture, because I am interested in sustainability-related topics (also bc that’s what I’m studying).
Actually I (mostly) love cleaning and typing up, especially with good music in my ears :)
And in general I can work independently and don’t mind spending time on my own. But I also love working in a like-minded, motivated group and finishing projects together.
Furthermore, I love speaking and learning different languages. I speak German (as my native language) fluently and English as well, mostly bc I study in English.
Since I’ve been living in Nicaragua for some months, I speak Spanish very well and I always need to smile when I hear somebody speak Spanish around me and I love talking in that language.
I was also quite good in French but “forgot” a lot since I talked Spanish on a daily basis and that’s so similar to French.
Also, my father is a sign language interpreter so I learned a little bit from him, but would love to learn more!Age
