Description
Hello, I am Stephanie, a brazilian young woman (31) on a solo journey in India. :) I am an open minded, social and creative person, willing to learn, help and explore! As an anthropologist, i am passionate about getting immersive experiences in different cultures, and as an artist, I find specially rewarding to inspire others and promote self-expression (through workshops of dance, circus, cinema and photography). I also strongly believe in permaculture as a healthier alternative of living life on this planet, and I have had many good experiences in Brazil volunteering in farms, ecovillages and permaculture centers, so I would love being a helpful hand in that too! I see myself as seeker of inner growth, and for a couple of years now i have been studying and practicing yoga, which i would also love to deepen and share.

Volunteering here was one of the most beautiful experiences i’ve had in India so far. We stayed at the NGO guesthouse for five days, which was a short time, but enough to realize this is a serious project with an invaluable impact on the local community.

From the first moment I contact Michael (who I only ‘met’ through whatsapp, since he is in… read more German now) I felt very welcomed and free to help with whatever was up to my preferences and skills, so I gave yoga classes for the kids, Leo took on painting and reading activies, and we also helped dear Susuma in the kitchen to cook lunch for the students. Michael was always concerned about my well-being, keeping in touch to know how the day was, so I would send him photos and share my thoughts and feelings. His love for the kids and the good care he takes of the NGO and the volunteers, even from a distance, was truly very inspiring.

Murari and his family also were the kindest: as we arrived, they had prepared a very comfortable and clean bedroom with private toilet and hot shower, where we could rest our tired backpacker bodies just like we needed and wished for (guys, we felt so lucky when we enter that room!!). His wife Rita is the sweetest, always inviting us for delicious home cooked meals on her rooftop, and when it was Leo’s bday she surprised us with a decorated cake! It did feel like we were part of the family that had come to visit, and i will always be very thankful for that.

The kids at school were just the cutest sweethearts, always hugging while calling me “Didi” (a hindi word for 'older sister'), joining the activities with enthusiasm and curiosity. We would stay with them every day from around 9:30 to 13h, having the rest of the day free to explore around the calm and rich Bodhgaya, the place of enlightenment of the Buddha. So, we would go out to visit its huge variety of temples and monasteries (from different nationalities: butanese, thailand, vietnan, nepali, chinesee etc), giant statues and colourful bazzars.

Murari and Michael are currently trying to expand the school to reach an even greater number of children, especially girls from the rural area of Bodhigaya, who due to gender issues face other important challenges in accessing education.

In the end It was kinda hard to say bye to this place and every being that it involves, even the cows and the dogs, for it was a nourishing time we spent there and an experience that goes beyond words. I write this with a warm feeling that I will be back one day. <3
