hey! I'm Silja :)
I was born and raised in Massachusetts, but my mom is Danish and my dad is Swiss. I grew up very multiculturally and I've developed quite the passion for travelling and language learning. I moved into a boarding school in Denmark from I was 16, until I was 18 and have been moving back and forth between Copenhagen and the US on my own almost every year since. I have family and friends living in many different countries and have always felt most comfortable around other internationally-minded people. For this reason I absolutely adore travelling and getting the chance to expand the connections I have in the world, and just recently got home from a 7-month solo backpacking trip around South America!
Psychology is a true passion of mine and I am pursuing a career in international social work and mental health counselling. I feel inspired to travel because I believe that being open-minded is an essential trait to being an empathetic and successful social worker and want to put myself in situations where I can experience new things, places, and people and learn from them! I will be starting a Masters degree in Social Work starting September 2025 and am looking to get some valuable volunteer experience and make a difference in communities in need of help!

More details about my language interests
I have been learning Spanish for the past 4 years and just spent 7 months backpacking South America in order to solidify my understanding and ability to speak the language. I would love to find a volunteer opportunity where I can continue to improve my Spanish skills. I also speak a variety of languages and love any form of language exchange! I think language should always be a give and take :)

In 2022, I graduated with a BA in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts: Amherst. In the 2 years following my graduation, I have worked a variety of jobs including as a full-time receptionist for a co-working space, as a waitress at a 4-star hotel in Copenhagen, as a Danish teacher, and as a volunteer at a hostel in northern Colombia. I have worked, at least part-time, in the service industry since I was 15 and find a lot of enjoyment in creating a welcoming environment for guests. However, I am now in a place where I am ready to begin working more within my dream career, international social work. I have volunteered for a couple different organisations in the past, including a food pantry in Massachusetts and the Danish Refugee Council. I am looking to use my skills to make impactful change in the community and to finally bring forth the passion I've always had for helping others. I am extremely hard-working and social, love to connect with new people, and am open to new experiences! I enjoy organising and planning - helping others to bring their ideas into reality - and I hope that I can help you too!

In my free time, I attend latin dance socials (specifically for the salsa!), read fantasy books, make bracelets, cook/bake new and exciting recipes (savoury and sweet) for my friends and family, listen to music, and travel to a variety of destinations!

I love to meet new people and find it exciting to try new hobbies! I am also a beach person through and through and love to relax near any and all bodies of water. I will be spending the summer working in a hiking hut in the Swiss Alps, as a cook/waitress.
