Hi !

My name’s Sam, I’m French but moved to the UK when I was 12 and have lived there ever since, always with a feeling impossible to ignore, a drive to discover and experience different cultures and parts of this world. After having had a small taste of it, 10 years later I am ready to take a bigger bite ! I often find myself in awe, so fascinated and curious about the beautiful world we live in, and all the different ways it can be experienced. I need to see it before it’s too late, to appreciate and understand it more and as a result be a more productive/active part of it, to eventually come back with a fresh pair of eyes and a richer soul.

I would say the only thing that truly makes me happy is the feeling that I am making something of this life, that my time on earth is not going to waste. It's also knowing that by expanding my own mind and experiencing new things, meeting different people, learning from them and acting through the lens of my newly acquired perspectives, I can make this world an ever so slightly better place and help others do the same.

I am a filmmaker and my passion/vocation is directing films, which is entirely based on a range of very important life skills which I think (despite always trying to improve and learn) I am quite good at, these include :

- Attention to detail
- Expressing / Communicating ideas
- Team work and collaboration
- Problem solving and taking initiative
- Honesty, and accountability

Amongst many others, I think my experience in making highly ambitious very low budget films and studying at film school really made me build on those skills.

Working various hospitality jobs these past few years also helped me improve these skills and understand their importance.

I am very eager to learn and have been told a lot that I am a quick learner, you never have to tell me anything twice. Finally I’d like to add that I am open to any kind of work ! As part of why I am doing this is to learn new skills and ways of living.

To write a review for this place on Workaway almost feels surreal, as the space that Chris and everyone else involved with the project have created transcends any kind of volunteering experience I’ve ever encountered. Like many people before me and many people to come, I arrived in that sacred space on a travelling momentum, on the escape, running… read more blindfolded, and left with a new pair of running shoes and a clearer vision of the journey ahead of me and of the impact my steps have on this earth.

I could write a book with all the important knowledge I have acquired in only a bit over a month at the library : Through the practical work I was given taking care of and giving back to awe abidingly potent and ever so surprising plants or through surrendering myself to the service of my community by engaging in the sacred work of Temazcals and other fire ceremonies, through the inspiring people I’ve met in the gravitational radius of the space, or through the wisdom and ancient knowledge that Chris is a vessel of. Named “carrier of light” by his tribal elders, he aims to honour that title every day of his life, or at least every day I have been in his presence, and does a damn good job of it!

If you are interested in understanding a way of life we westerners have distanced ourselves from, a way of living in synchronicity and symbiosis with our oldest teachers : the plants, and working towards giving back to the natural world that birthed us and getting your hands dirty contributing to a space you believe in, if you are willing to give up any preexisting conceptions of the world around you, to understand it best through the eyes of ancient communities. If you want to be a part of something bigger, to be a seed in the dream of those who wish to conserve the dying, invaluable knowledge these plants hold, if you wish to dip your roots in the lake of consciousness and to grow into a tree rich with life to be able to one day share the fruit of these perspectives yourself and be a positive impact on our natural world, this is the place for you. However if you are solely looking for a fun psychoactive trip in the woods, please advise ~ knowledge and wisdom come with hard work and despite the epic excursions and experiences Chris offers, this is a space of learning and coming together for a deeper purpose not a holiday/retreat ! Work there can be long and hard and some of the experiences presented there are not for the feeble minded, everyone has fears, deep down or above surface, the difference is if you are able and willing to overcome them, think of your journey at the library like one long Temazcal, the ultimate warrior test ! That was my experience of it anyway.

I will definitely try and come back to this palce one day, as it holds a special place in my heart and acted as a solid milestone in my personal development. Because I truly believe that if you stop learning, you stop living and start dying. Following that thought, the place truly earns its title, as every day spent there becomes a chance to grow, discover, and breathe new life into the mind and spirit.

And wish all future volunteers to have as enriching an experience as I have and to have your own beautiful impact on the space - Just think of it as your own, as a part of you and you a part of it, treat it with love and respect and you will find what you are looking for there and more.
