Hi there! My name is Maria and I'm an adventure-seeking traveler from Germany currently at home having just finished my studies and now looking for some new adventures. In 2023 I took off the time to travel through East Asia after my exchange in Hong Kong until mid May. I ended up up spending the whole year away and made some amazing connections and memories. Top of my list definitly have to be helping out in a diving school in Thailand and starting my way to a diving instructor and hiking for almost 3 consecutive weeks in the Himalayas. Even before that I've had my fair share of globetrotting experiences, from completing a workaway program in Canada to road tripping across Europe in my trusty car during breaks from studying Computer Science and Business. One of my passions is the great outdoors, and I'm always up for a good hike (I've crossed the Alps multiple times now!), kayaking, swimming, camping, biking - anything that lets me revel in the beauty of nature.

As someone who loves learning about new things, I'm constantly seeking out new experiences and opportunities to expand my horizons. I'm deeply passionate about both the small and big things in life, and I'm always eager to connect with new people and forge meaningful connections. I'm equally comfortable in social situations, where I'm happy to take the first step in getting to know others, as well as in moments of solitude, where I relish the opportunity for self-reflection and personal growth.

In addition to my adventures on the road, I've also worn many hats in various jobs along the way, including working as a software developer, waitress, small house renovator, English teacher, babysitter, German tester, airport cargo worker, conference helper, and more. During my last workaway experience in the Phillipines I helped out in building new hust and learning some more carpentry skills (which is something I am more than willing to conitnue because it was a lot of fun and very interesting!), helping the place open up to more booking oportunities (opening accounts on Agoda, LonelyPlanet, Hostelworld, etc.) and managing their social media presence. This consinsted mainly of created stories, responding to messages and creating content in the format of reels and picture based posts. These diverse experiences have enriched my life and shaped my perspective in countless ways. One of them definitly accepting that plans are all good and needed at times but that they also don't work out quite often and that a positive attitude for work and flexibility can go a long way.

As I continue discovering a new part of the planet, I am enthusiastic about exploring volunteering opportunities and contributing to meaningful projects. Whether it's immersing myself in a new culture, learning new skills, or lending a helping hand, I am eager to be part of projects that have a positive impact on communities and the environment. I look forward to working together to create memorable experiences and hopefully make a tiny bit of a difference in this world!

While my cooking skills are a work in progress, I'm eager to pitch in and help with basic cooking tasks. I'm a social person and would be thrilled to give tours or be the first one to show somebody around. I can assist with some techy stuff depending on what you are in need of ;) When it comes to renovating houses, I have helped my friends with various projects and been involved in a lot (...) of moving processes, from painting walls to fixing furniture (more or less expertly) and even creating a new terrace. Lately, I have become more interested and also skilled in social media content creation, so could easily assist in creating new content in the format of reels / blog articles / posts or small videos as well as general maintenance of an online presence.

This workaway experience was so much more than simple volunteering. Instead of 2 weeks, I ended up staying over a month. I found a part of my family in this place. An openness and acceptance and possibility for whatever is needed at the moment.
The volunteering didn't feel like a work exchange most of the days just because the members are here to… read more embrace and encourage all the different passions you might have. Want to build a shelf for one of the huts - awesome. Want to work on painting a sign today - go for it. Want to try out cooking a vegan dinner for an armada of hungry mouths - amazing.

A usual day would look like this during the time I was here:
8-9 am morning workshop organized by the volunteers (think yoga, creative writing, arts, intuitive body movements or completly different things like survival or history - whatever the people staying there at the moment think of)
brekkie
9:30 am meeting to figure out what everybody is doing
10-12:30 am work on individual projects (a pair of people will go shopping for dinner during this time and will be making dinner for everybody during the week, weekends you have to get your own food)
During my stay i helped out with building the new kitchen space and learned a lot about carpentry from my amazing teacher Baptiste ;), helped out with some art projects and spend the majority working on social media and other related projects.

The rest of the time was spent exploring this beautiful island and discovering things outside and inside. Siquijor is a smaller island but because of that a bit less touristy as well. You will probably rent a scooter and if you dont know how to drive yet, people are always willing to teach you or offer you a ride depening on your preference:) I made it a priority to go snorkeling as often as possible (the reefs are not as damaged as in other places because the island is protected by bigger islands from typhoons), got my PADI license, explored the waterfalls and jungle, drink a lot of coffee and soaked up the serene atmopshere of the place with beautiful sunsets, fireflies at the night at the beach, crystall clear water and delicious fruits. But the best part of the island are the people and the community I found here. Michael is an amazing manager and made me feel like i could always come with any suggestions or problems I had to her. Rebecca is just the sweetest soul and will always have an open ear for you (might call you "pobrecito" and make you feel like you are loved no matter what you do). As is probably evident, I was completly smitten with this place, will definitly be back and recommend staying here >100%.
