Hi there!
My name is Madelyn, I'm originally from the UK but grew up in Northern British Columbia and Vancouver Island, Canada. In June of 2024, I graduated from McGill University in Montréal and began a year-long adventure around the world!
Over the past six-months or so, I have made my way through Western Europe, Iceland, the Hawaiian Islands, Tasmania, and am now hoping to explore more of Asia and the Pacific.
So much of what attracts me to workaway is the opportunity to meet like-minded people with a love for nature, animals, learning, and adventure. I have experience in childcare, ESL teaching, and animal care and would be hugely interested in learning more about gardening and home-improvement projects.
As of January 2025, I am seeking peaceful and positive workaways in Japan or South Korea where I can offer my skills, patience, and commitment to doing some good in this crazy world! Thank you for reading and I hope to meet you soon:)

Madelyn is such a sweet and friendly person with a beautiful heart. She has this calm and kind energy that feels so nice, and which I especially find so important for the dogs, and also the other animals. And yes, they all reacted to her in such a positive way and they just loved to be with her.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Irene and all of the beautiful animals at the sanctuary for one month spanning part of June and July. I absolutely loved my stay and wholeheartedly recommend this workaway to fellow animal lovers with big hearts and positive energy!
Irene was the ideal host. From picking me up at the train station to dropping… read more me off at the bus she welcomed me and made me feel at ease for the entirety of my stay. Although the minimum amount of work preferred is manageable and enjoyable, I found myself wanting to help out and be part of the sanctuary more and more. Irene patiently showed me the ropes in the early days and then encouraged me through independent tasks, she was always there to answer questions and I consistently made me feel relaxed and assured in what I was doing.
The accommodation and natural scenery was wonderful. Central Portugal away from the hustle and bustle of bigger towns and cities is peaceful, picturesque, and perfectly experienced from the quiet of Irene's cabin or tent. I loved the privacy yet connectivity of being close to the main house, and still being able to sit and enjoy the sunrises from my own little space.
Last but certainly not least, the dogs! Each one of the dogs at Irene's sanctuary has their own fabulous, unique personality which you will inevitably fall in love with as I did. I learned a lot about animal welfare and caring for elderly, sick, and differently-abled dogs, all of which makes me feel more confident in adopting my own dog one day. Not only are the dogs excellent teachers who seemed to make the stressors of every day life seem to fade away, but Irene is an exceedingly knowledgeable person and taught me a great deal about all the dogs and other animals at the sanctuary.
As a closing note, something that I often say to friends and family when telling them about my stay at Irene's sanctuary is that this workaway was one of the few things I have done that truly felt like a net good. Irene's mission to provide better lives to these previously neglected animals is inspiring and heartwarming to say the least. If you are open to approaching this opportunity with the patience and love that Irene pours into all of her work with animals, I am sure you will have a lovely time and walk away with unforgettable bonds and experiences.
