  • Description

Hello! Our names are Lydia Derrico and Marie Livingston. We are two best friends who met working as glacial canoe guides in the Alaskan wilderness. Living in an off-grid environment together brought us close as friends and we became each other's dream travel buddy! Many of our friends joke that we are the same person, as we have very similar hobbies, personalities, and backgrounds. We enjoy spending time outside together hiking and geeking over different plants and animals that we find. We also agree that food is the best part of life, and we are very passionate about making yummy and nourishing meals. Here is more about us individually:

Hi! My name is Marie, and I currently live in Cleveland, Ohio. In 2020 I spent a semester studying sustainable farming at Ohio University, but decided the school route wasn't for me. Since then, I've been pursuing my education outside of the classroom. I've always had an affinity for nature and animals, and I love getting my hands dirty! Being outdoors, caring for the earth around me, and working with animals brings me true joy. I have plenty of experience with horses as I grew up riding and have worked at barns caring for many animals, including; horses, cows, goats, chickens, bunnies, and several barn cats. I also have experience working in forestry and conservation and would love to further my learning there. I am passionate about native plants, and connecting with the earth by learning about the plants that shaped the landscape around me. Most of the experience I have had in the farming world has been on the animal welfare side of things, but my main interest lies in growing crops in a way that nourishes, and uplifts the land, rather than taking away from it. I hope to find a Workaway opportunity to continue working with some lovely farm animals and learn more hands-on about agriculture and sustainability. I love being outside and I'm not one to shy away from a hard day's work or a little dirt!

Hello! My name is Lydia, and I currently live in Dayton, Ohio. I recently graduated in May with a Bachelor of Science in Environment and Natural Resources from the Ohio State University. While my studies focused mostly on wildlife ecology and management, I am most passionate about environmental education. I believe that through education, we can instill environmental values in people who will work to protect our future on this planet. In college, I spent two summers in Ohio as an environmental educator, creating nature-based programs for the public in both state and metro parks. In April of this year, I skipped my college graduation ceremony to move 4,000 miles to Alaska to become a glacial canoe guide. I lived very remotely at the base of the glacier with no heat, running water, or electricity. In fact, many of our guests thought our cabins looked like outhouses! Needless to say I am not afraid to face the natural elements or get my hands dirty. Outside of work, I enjoy photographing the beautiful landscapes I encounter on my grandfather's 50 year old film camera! I am looking for a Workaway opportunity that helps the environment, boosts my creativity, and teaches me practical skills that I can use in my personal life.
