My name is Linden (they/them) and I'm a filmmaker, a storyteller, and a bit of a transient. I am currently a digital nomad that requires a lot of screen time, so being outside in nature and having that balance is crucial for me now more than ever. I'm a hands on learner, and making lasting connections as well as finding peace in my outdoor environment is what truly grounds me. I'm naturally curious and extremely empathic. I stay motivated in variety, in understanding, and in mutual respect. I love to surround myself with artists, thinkers, and fellow empaths who have a mutual love for nature, sustainability, and asking questions.

I'm a previous WWOOFer! I worked on two farms when I lived in Maine in 2021, one a strawberry farm and one a vegetable farm. At the vegetable farm I volunteered with through WWOOF, I performed a variety of tasks, including: picking, washing and packing salad greens, assembling and organizing orders for customers, cutting and hauling firewood, weeding, roto tilling and fertilizing soil, assembling hoop covers for outdoor garden beds, making repairs on greenhouses, planting tulip bulbs, learning seed inventory, and so much more. I even helped herd a group of pigs back to their pen when they escaped! I love variety and learning new skills as often as possible.

During Fall 2022, I spent a month living and working at a chestnut orchard. I was largely responsible for taking care of the far east orchard which scaled over 25 acres of trees. During my stay at the farm, I took on several different projects such as mowing the orchards, harvesting and sorting chestnuts, helping install an outdoor kitchen and shower area, watering the vegetable garden, and a few other light tasks. I lived in community with up to 18 people on the property and had the time of my life!

Additionally, I have a background in film and video, so I have an eye for detail. I'm an extremely visual and creative person, and I love telling a good story. I have experience being on film sets as a production assistant, grip, assistant camera op, script supervisor, etc. I have experience working in the industry in both LA and NYC. Being on set was one of my greatest joys, as I love being a part of the action and having a hand in a variety of different tasks.

I love to kayak and play guitar, and I typically bring them both with me wherever I go! I also love live music and participating in drum circles, but I also tend to thrive with ample quiet time to myself.

My month-long stay at Martin's farm was unforgettable. Not only was I able to fully immerse myself in the magic of the chestnut trees, but I got to find an incredible sense of community with my fellow workawayers. At the height of the season, there were as many as 18 of us living on the grounds, the most there had ever been at one time! I found… read more picking chestnuts to be hard work but extremely rewarding. I would definitely expect to pick a little less than you anticipate; it is a time-consuming process.

On top of chestnut picking, I also extended a fair share of help mowing and doing odd jobs around the farm. About half of my month-long stay was dedicated to mowing and tending to the younger chestnut trees in the far east orchard, and it certainly paid off. It felt like such an immense reward and blessing to be able to work with the trees in that orchard.

Martin's family is lovely. I got to meet Martin's father, Bob, while transporting/sorting chestnuts in their new facility across the street. I met Martin's sister, Julie, while she tended to the young trees in her orchard next to Martin's house. They are all dedicated, knowledgable and exceptional people that I feel honored to have met, and they work tirelessly to keep the American chestnut species alive. Martin's kids, Louis, Roger and Ben, are also incredibly sweet, intelligent and fun to be around. I will miss all of their fun facts and silly costumes.

Martin himself is gifted, creative and generous. He is an exceptional thinker, teacher and musician. However, what we really lacked on the farm was basic organization and structure. We created our own schedules, meaning we woke up and were out working in the fields whatever time we wanted, which was wonderful, but at times having unclear expectations had a serious impact on our morale and efficiency, especially as it got colder outside. There was also little to no accountability when it came to completed work, tracking which rows had/needed to be mowed or picked. This process was pretty messy for the duration of my stay. If you are a person who relies on structure, organization, and guided direction, this is probably NOT the place for you.

Additionally, when it came to accommodations, all was well until it got cold outside. This truly is a bare-bones setup, which I personally loved, but it can also be challenging. Be prepared to bring your own blankets, linens and warm clothing, or be ready to buy some. Many of us were sleeping out in tents or in campers outside and it often got as low as 35 degrees F in October.

Overall, I had a really exceptional and fulfilling time here at the farm, and I feel so incredibly fortunate to have met good friends from all over the world. I will think of my time here incredibly fondly. My biggest suggestion is to make sure to track all your hours yourself and have a conversation with Martin before AND when you arrive to discuss payment in order to set up some ground rules for yourself and avoid confusion. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
