  • Description

Hi! I have arrived to New Zealand with an WHV. That means that I can volunteer here as much as I like which is great!

Something about me: I'm a young professional from Finland. I'm an educated social worker and about to finish my master's degree during the year. That is a goal which I'm trying to reach while travelling around this beautiful country. So, you could say that in someways I am a digital nomad.

Here I am interested mostly in farm stays, creative projects and communal living arrangements. Whether it be a private commune or a hostel. I want to see different ways of organizing life that doesn't have to follow the normative expectations that society puts on us.

So far I have been able to have amazing encounters on Workaway. I stayed two weeks in summer 2018 in an anarchist community in Denmark helping with gardening and carpentry. In spring 2019 I stayed with a lovely lady for two weeks on the east coast of Canada in her self-renovated house and helped with gardening. In August 2019 I managed to find a community in Portugal where I stayed yet again two weeks to help with gardening, carpentry and general household chores. Each of these visits have been inspiring and centered around nature. The place in Portugal didn't have cellphone service for the most of the time. So, maybe we could learn something from each other?

When it comes to farming and gardening, originally I come from the middle of Finland, from a smaller city. My grandparents owned a farm there and I spent a lot of time there while growing up: I did painting, gardening, cleaning and harvesting, so farm life is not that new to me. Only difference is there really weren't any animals to maintain for, but the basic maintenance is something I can do.

On creativity, I think I have a creative way of thinking and many ideas to always explore. As I am educated in human relations, interaction skills and societal issues, I would be happy to use these in some way for your benefit.

  • More details about your skills

I know the basic maintenance, e.g. gardening, painting and so fort. Through my previous jobs I've got a lot of experience with cooking and cleaning. While staying with my grandparents and with workaway hosts I have learned a thing or two about building (I can use mostly manual tools and I'm learning more about automatic or electricity needing ones) and I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. I can design event or website lay-outs, but I do not know coding. I have also done some DIY and creative projects, such as organizing arts and crafts afternoons and painted a mirror.

As a social worker I have mostly worked with elderly and know something about the elderly care.

    • Allergies
If eaten, then I'm allergic to mustard and kiwi fruits.

    • Special dietary requirements
I eat vegan food and I don't feel uncomfortable around people who eat animal-based. If you have the opportunity of using locally and sustainably produced eggs or dairy products, I might be okay using those same products.
