Hello, lovely Workawayers!

I’m Lana, a 23-years old student from Slovenia who adores travelling, is a big foodie and quite an overthinker, so I'm always down for some good old what-is-this-life-about kind of debates haha. Perhaps that's why I decided to pursue philosophy after completing my bachelor's degree in education—to finally find the answers I've been seeking.

Anyway I love cracking jokes and I'm always up for exciting adventures. I am spontaneous, free spirited person, trying to live in the moment and appreciate everything life throws my way, whether it's good or bad. I love helping others in the best way possible and give back to the community while also taking care of our precious planet as much as I can.

What drives me? An insatiable desire to learn. Knowledge is my ultimate passion and my highest virtue. But don't get me wrong—I'm not just talking about textbook learning stuff. I'm referring to life experiences that enrich your soul, cultivate wisdom, and provide a deeper understanding of yourself, society, and life in general. That is why I have tried myself in all kind of different jobs, including waitressing, volunteering in the army, teaching, working with individuals with special needs, cooking, being a swimming instructor, accountant, au pair, and more. Currently, I work as a student in a hostel in our capital city, Ljubljana, and help at the art studio where I assist in organizing painting and clay lessons. In my free time, I love channeling my creativity into DIY projects, and it seems I don't run out of ideas! At the moment I am renovating an old bike:)

Why I am on Workaway? Because I believe its important to give back to community, to gain new experiences and to meet new lovely people:) Since I love kids and spending time with them truly make me happy, my first choice are the projects that are including teaching! I strongly believe that teachers have the chance to make a difference in the lives of children, providing them with guidance, support, and a safe space to learn and grow. One of the most rewarding thing for me is seeing a student evolving and achieving their goals!:)

I had the pleasure of staying at Mark's hostel for nearly two weeks, and it was an intriguing experience. My typical weekday, from Monday to Thursday (with Fridays off), followed a particular routine: I'd start my day by assisting Mark in cleaning the hostel. After that, I had free time until around 5 pm, followed by an hour of teaching at Mark's… read more school. Saturdays were a bit different, with two classes during the day, and on Sundays, just one class.

Regarding the hostel's cleaning tasks, I personally prefer clear instructions and schedules, but the daily routine and tasks felt somewhat flexible and not very specific. Also, Mark usually handled most of them, which occasionally left me a bit uncertain about my role there. Nevertheless, if you were eager to help, there was always work to be done.

Now, about the classes, I must say that the children were incredibly charming, kind, funny, and simply adorable. The class sizes were relatively small, ranging from 2 to 6 children, and the teaching itself was quite manageable. Initially, I was a bit apprehensive about being on my own in a classroom, but Mark was a great help. He provided me with ideas and various games, allowing me to learn many new teaching techniques. He ensured that I felt comfortable before venturing into solo teaching, which I greatly appreciated. So if you want to learn some new techinques, Mark has hundreds of them up his sleeve!:)

During my free time, I had the privilege of spending a significant amount of it with Mint, Mark's wife. Her companionship truly enriched my experience tenfold. She shared valuable insights into Thai culture and traditions, introduced me to their delicious cuisine, took me to the best noodle places and markets, and even patiently taught me how to crochet. I cherished every moment spent with her.

As for the city of Phitsanoluk, I must admit that I didn't quite grasp its overall vibe. To me, it felt somewhat transient, like a place where travelers stop for a night or two before moving on (bus station vibe). I also struggled to find activities that truly piqued my interest, though this could be subjective since I had just come from the lively Thai islands (I also found myself spending more time on my own than usual). However, exploring the city and its surroundings typically required a scooter, which made sightseeing more accessible.

In summary, my stay at Mark's hostel was a unique experience that introduced me to new challenges and delightful moments, thanks in large part to Mark's guidance with classess and Mint's wonderful companionship during the days. While Phitsanoluk may not have matched my previous island adventures, it still offered its own distinct charm and opportunities for (self) exploration.
