I am a qualified teacher specialising in preschool, my previous role in teaching included being the Eco-Lead of the school which included designing the environmental awareness curriculum and establishing/maintaining sustainability systems within the school (recycling, composting, eco garden, animal care, energy saving devices, etc.) I have also worked as a carer and am First-Aid trained.

I learnt so much at the preschools and farms in Sinoni Village! I was welcomed into all the projects and was able to collaborate with so many amazing people. I felt like part of the community. Mama Jeska was such an amazing host and she looked after us so well, her cooking is so delicious! My favourite meals were chapati and lentils with veggies!… read more So yummy! I love hanging out with Mama Jeska and her family and was so honoured to celebrate Jeska's birthday with her. I always felt at home in the volunteer housing. Everyone in the community was so nice and friendly. I will always remember walking to the office and saying "Mambo, Poa!" to everyone. I never felt such a friendly community in my life. There is something very special about this place.
Working in the schools I had the privilege of observing some fascinating childcare practices. Both schools have excellent leadership with Madame Ruth and Madame Jessica, and the teachers are so creative and have so much love and care for the children. Teacher Yemama was an amazing mentor to me in the classroom, she was very experienced and I was really lucky to learn from her. Then I got to collaborate with Teacher Joyce and Teacher Reagan as we organised to take the children on a school trip to the farm!! This was the most amazing end to the project as the children got to see where their food comes from! And the farm manager Innocent is a natural educator, everyone was so engaged in his amazing tour of the farm. I came home really inspired to be a better teacher and a felt like I discovered a courage in myself that I didn't know was there. Everyone helped me to see the best in myself. I think a lot about the experiences that I had either in schools, on the farm, or at the community dinners and outings. Even one night we put the projector up in the farm house and watched a nature documentary. It was so cool! When the cheetah came on the the screen our dog Chinka started barking. He thought it was real!! We all laughed. Chinka is the dog who loves to spend time with volunteers. He used to love walking us to the office.
I really hope my time working will not end. Joseph offered me an opportunity that our preschools can write letters to each other to do cultural exchange and to support the outdoor learning program. When I return to my schools in August we will be able to send letters and build a relationship between the children at our schools. It will be greatly enriching for them. I look forward to continue working with the preschools there and I hope to visit again in the future!
