Description
A few months ago I quit my job in software to spend some time traveling and experiencing different lifestyles so that I can learn how to live more deliberately.

I love being outdoors (hiking, canoeing, backpacking), playing music, reading, rock climbing, playing board games, and knitting (I'm not very good yet but I can churn out hats like nobody's business).

I'm a hard worker, and I've been told I make a good grunt. Unfortunately I'm only fluent in English, but I can understand some Mandarin and Spanish at a beginner level. I'm a quick learner and will work hard to acquire proficiency in your language if you'll help me!

I'm most interested in spending my time this year with people who are open to teaching me new things and exposing
me to new points of view. I'm looking forward to the experience!

I have done a large amount of manual labor including gardening, landscaping, carpentry, and boat work (I worked as a deckhand on a cruise ship).

I have spent a significant amount of time outdoors including working as a canoe guide in the Boundary Waters between the US and Canada and hiking the Appalachian Trail on the east coast of the US.

I have experience working with children as a mentor through organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Matriculate. I have never worked as a teacher, but I have done some tutoring, and I would be interested in gaining more experience in this area.

I have also worked in healthcare settings and with hospice patients.

My largest area of expertise is with computers, but I would prefer to get away from technology as much as possible (although I'm happy to help you set up your printer if you get stuck).

I came to Zeuss on very short notice (two days) and then proceeded to stay the entire summer (7 weeks). I stuck around for so long because living with Zeuss is an incredibly fun experience.

I only wish I could have stuck around a few more weeks to learn from him the process of log milling and tiny home construction.

The work we did was often very physical. and, as a result, very rewarding; however, there were also a decent number of chill days where we just cleaned up around the property or worked on one of the million projects Zeuss has going at any given moment. I found Zeuss to be very flexible with scheduling, and if I told him that I needed a break or wanted to do a certain job on a given day he was always very accommodating.

The accommodations are comfortable, and you will have access to heat and electricity. In addition, Zeuss is an excellent cook, and he proves his skills in the kitchen at least once a day (but usually multiple times a day). I mostly contributed to the food situation by cleaning up the dishes from his masterpieces (first with my fork and then in the sink).

I found that Zeuss took the Workaway experience seriously, and he went out of his ways to show me things I would be interested in. Furthermore, if I expressed interest in doing something, he found a way to make it happen.

Over the summer we went to numerous parties and concerts (probably 1 a week on average). The community is incredible and everyone I met was exceedingly kind. There is also a high concentration of Workaway hosts on the island, and through them I was able to meet and befriend a number of other travelers.

Galiano is a great place for music, and I got the chance to jam with/learn from several incredibly talented musicians on the island. Zeuss has tons of cool instruments, and he displayed amazing patience by tolerating seven weeks of listening to me strumming and hollering on his porch. We also started a sea shanty band, although we're still working on getting a consistent practice schedule.

In our free time, we often explored Galiano's beautiful woods, played games, visited friends and planned dive trips. I went on seven dives with Zeuss while I was on Galiano, and, if you're a certified diver, I think you MUST try to stay with Zeuss. He is an excellent dive partner and got me quickly initiated into cold water diving. He is also a skilled marine biologist/photographer with a deep knowledge of the sea life around the islands. In our seven dives he found the elusive Great Pacific Octopi on three separate occasions.

Overall, Workaway with Zeuss is pretty amazing. He is a caring, passionate, hilarious person, and I feel fortunate to call myself among his friends. If you're looking for a place to learn and laugh, this is it.
