Hello everyone, I’m Karla (she/her)! I’m recent college graduate from the Bay Area, but originally from Los Angeles. During my time in the Bay, I have picked up a number of odd jobs and became a resourceful, quick learner and a good listener. I also became a big fan of walking and taking public transportation. As a naturally curious person, travel and trying new things brings me great fulfillment. Because of this, I am interested in cultural exchanges and learning new languages; already I speak fluent English and Spanish, intermediate Italian, and am a beginner in French and Cantonese! By participating with Workaway, I hope to fuel my own goals of helping others and bringing them joy. For instance, one thing that makes me particularly happy is cooking for others and seeing them enjoy what I made. Not only do I like to cook, but I like to bake too, especially vegetarian and vegan dishes as I am a vegetarian! Additionally, I love reading (Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri is my favorite book), watching movies (top three are: Machuca, When Harry Met Sally, and X), dancing, (danced traditional Mexican folklorico for 13+ years) and journaling. I would love to meet you one day!

More details about my language interests
Although I was born in the states, both of my parents are from Mexico and so, Spanish, technically is my first language. I am fluent in the Spanish and have a deep love for the language and culture. I would love to converse with you in Spanish, practice with you, and especially teach you Mexican slang and dishes! English however is my dominant language as I am a native speaker and use it the most, but I am more than happy to practice English with you. For the past two years, I have been studying Italian and believe I had reached an intermediate level; I can understand and read Italian quite well but would love more practice speaking it. Lastly, is French. For one summer, in 2022, I took French courses and acquired basic knowledge of the language but would love to develop it further.

I am a capable and willing person. For the past year, I worked at a research center as a student administrative assistant. With my position, I learned how to properly take care of an office and its inner workings. I ordered supplies, hosted events, and completed administrative tasks such as fixing appliances and building furniture. Before that, I worked at a library as a front desk attendant, and excelled at archival and organizational skills. And before that, I worked in food service as an employee at a smoothie shop and picked up good customer service, communication skills, and learned how to work in a team. The smoothie shop was a fast paced environment, especially during the summer, but I adapted quickly. Thus, not only am I comfortable working in slower paced environments, I am just as comfortable working in fast ones. With these experiences, I picked up indelible assets just as I strengthened my own, those being: respect, communication, organization, kindness, patience, assertiveness, and a drive to work.
