  • Description

    Hi!
I'm Justin, a first time Workawayer from Ontario, Canada. I just finished my BA in Environmental Studies and spent the summer working at a tree planting camp so now I have the time to travel and experience other places. From what I have seen, workaway seems like a great way to travel to a new place and really soak in the local culture.

I'm not interested in just sightseeing, I want to actually experience what its like to live in new places and genuinely connect with different people. Spending my last few summers tree planting allowed me to meet and become friends with such interesting people from all over Canada and the world, and that was such an invaluable thing that has shaped me into a better person. Workaway sounds like the perfect thing to facilitate more of that.

A bit about me: I am a big outdoors person. Growing up I always went camping with my family and for the past few years with my tree planting job, I was able to spend my entire summers working and living outside. My schooling was also nature oriented. Environmental studies taught me a lot about resource use, sustainability, peoples relationship with the environment, and why the environment should be protected. These experiences have given me a very deep appreciation for the natural world. I am also a very physically active and adventurous person. I love a challenge, whether that's trekking through the wilderness, planting trees up a mountain, or climbing some rocks.

My hobbies: I love hiking, camping, rock climbing, snowboarding, playing recreational sports like volleyball, softball (really any sport), playing guitar/bass and writing music.

Looking forward to talking with you all about working opportunities!

  • More details about your skills

Education: I have completed an Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies. This taught me a lot about sustainable resource use, economics, politics and environmental policies, land use management, environmental impacts, and biology.

Teamwork: I work great on a team! While I was tree planting, we always had to be working with each other on large crews. Communication was key in managing the land we planted. As well, in university I had many group projects where teamwork and communication were very important.

Leadership: I was a crew boss for one of my seasons planting meaning I had to manage a crew of planters and make sure clear cut areas got planted properly. Planting is a tough job so I also had to make sure people were mentally and physically okay throughout the day and try to keep morale high.

Driving large vehicles: I had to do a lot of driving on logging roads in large trucks and buses.

Setting up and taking down camps: I also had to do a lot of setting up/taking down camp facilities. These were things like large mess tents, generators, water filtration systems, kitchen trailers, propane and gas lines that I had to set up.

Carpentry: I have also worked in a factory and construction sites so I have experience with power tools and woodworking.

Cooking: I have also worked in many kitchens and I enjoy cooking.

Outdoors skills: Back country camping, rock climbing, and tree planting have given me experience in many things like animal encounters, knot tying, canoeing, and kayaking.

First Aid: I also have standard first aid, CPR, and AED training.
