  • Description

We met during an AmeriCorps community service year volunteering with non-profits around the US, and also spent the summer of 2021 in Alaska as sled dog handlers. We worked and WWOOFed in Hawaii for a year and made it a priority to immerse ourselves in the culture and community. We both came to New Zealand several months ago and are looking to get back into a work trade. We have self-motivated and have positive, open minded attitudes.

    Jared:
I strive to be as adventurous as possible, and seek really cool (sometimes random) job opportunities in unique destinations to experience all walks of life. I both love being outdoors, and seek discomfort by putting myself out there, pushing my limits, and making lifelong connections.

I came to New Zealand last winter to kick start a career as a snowboard instructor on Mt. Ruapehu. Since coming down to South Island with Megan beginning of this year, I have been working on cherry/apple orchards and a range of vineyards all around the island to gain a deeper understanding of the value of the agriculture sector here and make connections with the local farmers and community. I plan on working one more winter season here in The Remarkables.

    Megan:
While living in Hawaii, I was hired as a mentor for a teen travel/leadership program in Maui, which focused on sea turtle and conservation education for teens. I spend my free time hiking, swimming, reading, and working part time jobs at local coffee shops.
I have made it a priority to learn about the history, language and food of Hawai'i by reading essential Hawaiian books, familiarizing myself with Pidgin and the Hawaiian language, and learning about the native produce that grows on my farms. I am so grateful I have been able to live here in a sustainable way while also giving back to the aina.

  • More details about your skills

We have worked as volunteers for many organizations, and have done a wide variety of manual labor. We've completed projects like: constructing houses, planting/mulching/trimming/pruning trees and shrubs, eliminating invasive species, habitat restoration, and maintaining lawns/trails/natural areas. We have experience with weed wackers, chain saws, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, and basic power tools. We also have worked with animals (sheep, pigs, chickens), doing daily feeding, watering, and cleaning. While in Hawaii, we have done fruit harvesting, garden maintenance, and other farm chores.
