  • Description

My name is Jakub and I come from north-western Slovak town Púchov, however since I started my studies as IT security engineer, I spend almost all my time in South-Moravian capital Brno (Czechia). Two years ago I finished the studies and now I work full-time as software developer and database engineer in an US-based software corporate, where I work on ensuring, that customers are not affected and preferably don't even notice frequent software updates, that ensure its stability and security.

How I spend my free time mostly depends on season of the year and how long the stretch of free time is. During colder days, I like to go indoor pool swimming twice a week after work. As a former competetive swimmer from my secondary and high school years, I am trying my best maintain the technique. Besides that, after my studies I've discovered passion for indoor climbing, also called bouldering, not just because of the climbing itself, but because it is a nice social activity and opportunity to spend time with friends. When at home, also like to play my bass guitar, as music is also a passion of mine. I have no particular preference in genre, but if the tune has an interesting bass line, it has also bonus points from me.

When it's winter and I visit my family for a weekend in Slovakia, which has significantly higher mountains and more snow than Brno and its surroundings, we like to go backcountry skiing. I like the fact that suffering is done only uphill and then it's all about nice views of snowy mountains and more enjoyable downhill ride.

During summer, I prefer going out of the city after work and during weekends, cycling or hiking around the surrounding areas. After all the years in Brno, there are still places to discover. In fact, if the weather is good, I have no problem going for a road or gravel bike ride 5 days in a row, no matter if it's on my own or with friends. I also spend a big portion of time looking at maps and planning the trips, where I always try to include some ascents rewarded with nice views at the top. During my summer visits at my family's, we spend the time mostly around the house and in the garden, taking care of plants and vegetables or going on walks with my parents' two dogs Ela and Zara.

When the stretch of free time is longer and days are warmer, I try to travel abroad (not couting Slovakia and Czechia as "abroad") at least once a month, whether it's with friends or family. I prefer road trips, where we spend each day at different place, with some balance between hiking days, walking around historical spots in cities, enjoying cuisine and just chilling by the water. My favourite destinations are not even that far from home - Italy and Slovenia.

As for my hobbies that do not require movement, I enjoy things related to geography, learning random stuff about countries, their history and political landscape. I'd say I spend significantly more time on Wikipedia, Maps and similar sites than average person. Other than that, I also like to watch and analyze road cycling sport, especially Grand Tours (three week stage races), taking place in Italy, France and Spain, not only because of the sport itself, but it includes plenty of aerial shots of places riders visit along the way, which inspire me in planning future trips.

I see workaway as an opportunity to help other people while having chance to explore places I haven't visited before, getting to meet new people and also experience and learn about different culture.

  • More details about your skills

Since my field of study is information technology, I can of course help with anything computer or networking related, I even worked as IT administrator during my studies.

My preference however is doing something different - as someone who grew up in a family house with garden and arable land, I have some experience working around the house - mowing grass, watering plants, picking fruit, etc. On a family friend's ranch in Spain I used to clean watering place for cows. Thanks to my father and grandfather I am also familiar with basic DYI stuff out of wood, like boxes or flower pot stands.

Inside the house, I can help in the kitchen, with cleaning or painting walls. I could also probably help kids studying for maths exam, as I used to help my sister with it in the past.

In addition, I am also open to expanding my knowledge and learning new things. Given that I receive clear instructions, I could probably help with other things not mentioned above.
