Hi there,

I am a happy and open-minded woman from Germany, who is usually living in Berlin.

I have a diploma in media studies. After graduating I worked at the university as a teacher für computer classes. During my studies I sold coffee and italian specialties at the local market place.

My biggest interest is food and healthy eating, and I am a vegetarian myself. I love cooking, baking and enjoying freshly prepared food. In my freetime I do yoga, go hiking, biking, paddling or swimming. I like to watch movies and love to have coffee and cake.

In 2016 I went to Canada. I traveled across the country, starting in Toronto all the way to Vancouver Island before returning to the Rocky Mountains. For nine months I worked as a cook in a restaurant in Banff National Park. In the summer of 2017 I workawayed (organic chicken farm, homestay with a family, B&B, grape harvest/vineyard) on Vancouver and Quadra Island before returning to Germany.

From 2018 to 2022 I worked as a team assistant in a lawyer's office and used to cook vegan/vegetarian lunch for my collegues.

In June 2022 I quit my job for a sabbatical. First I explored the Maritimes of Canada with a friend on a 4 weeks roadtrip. Afterwards I workawayed on Brier Island, at a Café in Montréal and on an apple orchard in Québec.

In September and October I traveled with a guided group from Mexico to Costa Rica, before flying to Ecuador, where I stayed for 3 months. In Cuenca I started learning Spanish and worked in a hotel.

After another group trip through Colombia I went to Panama, where I worked "around the house" in a hotel in Boquete for 2 months.

At the end of May I stayed in Costa Rica for a while before going back to Canada where I workawayed in a cottage at a lake in Ontario for 2 weeks.

At the end of June I returned to Germany.

I couldn't have asked for a better time here in Boquete! In all of my travels through Central America, this was by far my favorite place to work. I was supposed to stay for 4 weeks and have been there for 2 months, because I felt comfortable from the very first moment. I only left because my visa expired. ;-)

The team of receptionists, cleaners… read more and gardeners is awesome and Eva, the owner, a generous host. They are all really kind and help you with everything - work related as well as personal.

My room in the annex of the house where the owner lives, was large, bright, clean and quiet. In addition to a double bunk bed, there were, among other things, a desk and two chairs. Wifi was good, but a bit unstable. The bathroom with hot shower is shared only with another room, which is rented by the day or used by another workawayer. The staff kitchen in another building (the "lavanderia"), equipped with a gas stove, was used exclusively by me in the evenings as everyone else works only during the day. The reception is staffed from 7 am to 6 pm.

I worked 5 hours a day from 7 am to 12 noon, 5 days a week. However, in order to make day trips to the Gulf of Chiriqui and the Hot Spings, I was able to easily trade shifts.

Sabine, the German-speaking manager, is very understanding and supported me where she could. Her work instructions and descriptions were very clear and understandable. I worked mostly independently, but sometimes also together with her.

My duties included sweeping, painting, cleaning including carpets and windows, minor repairs, taking away recycling, walking Eva's two dogs and doing errands in town. I also had to turn on the outside lights on the property at nightfall between 6 and 6:30 pm, which took about 10-15 minutes. No hard work and often fun when it wasn't too stormy or too hot to be outside.

On top of that, the hotel is in the perfect location: nestled back away from all the hustle and bustle of a busy touristy town but still just a short walk to restaurants, coffee shops, banks, pharmacys and the brewery with its live concerts for free. The next supermarket is only 5 min away.

Both the café and the restaurant on the hotel premises are leased. As the cabañas and vacation apartments have their own kitchens, no breakfast is offered to the guests within the hotel service.

Getting to the hotel is easy: buses, which currently cost $1.75 and arrive in the center of town, constantly run the approximately 1.5-hour route to and from the provincial capital of David.

I am very thankful that I got to spend such a good time here with a bunch of nice and lovely people.

I am looking forward to the day I am able to get back!

As I initially filtered for "only hosts with a review" I almost did not find this place, although Aurora, the owner, is receiving workawayers for years. There is even 2 rooms just for "volontarios".
