I have always had many hobbies and constantly find new things that interest me. I like watching horror movies in the evenings and love exploring the woods near me with my dogs in tow.
Description
Hey everyone,

My name is Hanna and I was born and raised in Germany. I´ve graduated High School two years ago and have since traveled, worked at a bakery and started studying Social Work, which I quit it this spring.
I have felt rather unsure about what I should be doing with my future since then and decided that I need to get out of my home country for a while and wanted to experience a more sustainable and slower way of traveling.

I don´t have much experience in gardening but I know how to care for indoor plants and have grown up with a big garden. All my life I have been surrounded by animals. Be it dogs, cats, birds or guinea pigs. I feel the most at ease when I´m in nature and care deeply about animal welfare.

I enjoy getting to know new people and love being able to speak in languages other than my native one. Getting to eat local food, as well as seeing local architecture and art is one of my favorite things about traveling.

I have been volunteering at an animal shelter for two years now and have been helping my little sister with her homework for several years now.

I worked in a bakery so I have experience in costumer service and know how to lift heavy objects as well as working while being tired and in heat, so I think I´m quite equipped to help on farms in the summer heat.

I had a great time at Gertrude's farm. I stayed there for 16 days. There was a bit of an overlap with another workawayer so I had to sleep outside in a tent for a few days, since Gertrude only has one room for workawayers. This didn't bother me to much, the only problem was that it rained and stormed pretty heavily on those few days and it wasn't… read more that easy to fall asleep. But since that wasn't anything Gertrude could do about, it wasn't too bad. On my first day there, Gertrude showed me around the farm and pointed out any projects she wants to do around the farm as well as things she might need help with. She let me choose which project I was most interested in, which was unearthing an overgrown stone pathway on the backside of the farm and later pulling out weeds in the vegetable garden and making it look presentable again. Usually at breakfast we would discuss what I would be doing that day and then she either told me what she needed help with, I asked on my own or worked on my desired projects. First I fed the chickens and then I usually started work around 10:00 a.m after eating breakfast and worked until 15:30 to 16:00 p.m with a lunch break in the middle. On the days where the weather got too hot I started work earlier since I often worked right under the sun (which gave me quite the nice tan and on one day even some sunburn). After the five hours of work I always had free time and would often bike around the neighborhood or just chill in my tent and later room.

We always ate together and all meals were provided. Gertrude's daughter also usually joined us at dinner as well as the other workawayer while she was still there. I could decide on my own when I wanted to have my two free days so I usually had a free day on the weekend and one in the middle of the week. One day I got to drive with Gertrude to where she had to work and I got to look around in Haarlem and Alkmaar which was really great. The animals on the farm were great company as well and especially the cats were really affectionate and sweet to me.

All in all I had a great time and would recommend Gertrude to anyone who likes to explore more of the countryside of the Netherlands since it is more of a rural area. We had a lot of great conversations and I enjoyed her company immensely. I didn't really get to practice much Dutch but since talking in English was just easier for me I also didn't come forward with such a wish. I'm sure if you communicate beforehand that you would like to learn more Dutch Gertrude will be delighted to help you out.

Once again I can highly recommend you seek Gertrude out and help around her lovely farm. It was a delight to stay with you!
