Description
I've always enjoyed being active, playing sports and getting a good sweat on. I'm content when I'm working outdoors and with my hands. At the end of the day, if I'm exhausted but have a slight sense of accomplishment and gratitude, then I've had a good day. I was raised and currently live in New York City but I have a fondness for the countryside and am actively seeking a quieter lifestyle in a rural or suburban setting.

I've been a carpenter for about 14 years in the construction industry doing mostly residential home renovations. My skills in this area include but are not limited to rough framing, finish carpentry, flooring, doors, windows, decks, drywall, mud work, painting, tiling, roofing, siding, installing fixtures, installing structural beams, installing cabinets, masonry (concrete, walkways, pavers etc.), light plumbing and light electrical work.

I have experience with metal work and welding.

I have experience with a chainsaw and chopping firewood.

I enjoy cooking, sports, exercising, reading and learning about new things. I love a morning run, it's a great way to start the day. I played high school tennis and I currently play recreationally. I enjoy basketball, softball and pretty much any sport that gets my heart pumping. I play piano and a little bit of guitar, although I haven't touched either in years. At best I'd consider myself somewhere between horrible and ok. I'm disposed to problem solving through improvisation and resourcefulness but sometimes all it takes is a good whack with a hammer.

This was my first workaway experience outside of the United States and although I was apprehensive about going at first, I'm truly glad that I went. From the very beginning, with the initial correspondence with Kevin, he was very informative, helpful and supportive in planning my trip there. I flew into San Diego and took a bus to Tijuana. At… read more Tijuana I transferred to a different bus and took a long but relaxing and scenic bus ride to San Quintin.

There are two separate properties about a 2 minute car ride apart. The properties are situated in a small and rural town surrounded by farmland with small stores scattered throughout the town. About a 15 minute car ride away is a bigger town with plenty of restaurants and stores. It was a truly immersive experience for me. I visited a lot of the small grocery stores and the hardware store. I was lucky enough to attend the boys soccer team games and I tried a lot of the amazing foods in town. The locals that I interacted with were friendly and although my Spanish is extremely lacking, the people were always understanding and patient. There is a beautiful beach that's a short walk or bike ride away. I enjoyed the amazing views and numerous bike rides right on the beach.

As others have stated, there is a lot of work to be done there. Aside from the daily tasks of managing the day to day operations, there are numerous projects to be done in developing the properties as well as the programs for the locals and the families on the property. Kevin works diligently to keep things moving all the while being a thoughtful host. I'm a carpenter by trade but I took on plumbing projects during my time there and I was happy and willing to help in any way that was needed.

I developed friendships and relationships with the families, locals and animals there that I will cherish for a lifetime and hope to continue one day. Blanco(the cat), Luka(the calm dog) and Falcon(the energetic dog) have a special place in my heart and you'll see just how sweet and loving they are. There were other dogs on the 'dream center' property, one of which recently had puppies and they were a joy to see. I am grateful to Kevin for not just providing me with the opportunity to experience life there but for being accommodating, for his kindness, for showing me around and for the invaluable memories that I will carry with me.

It was a pleasure spending time with Alan installing doors, eating sandwiches from that deli(so good) and talking about everything from tools to theology. Alan is a knowledgeable and generous man with a kind and warm heart. He was appreciative and supportive throughout the experience and I'm glad to have made a friend with such great qualities.
