  • Description

Hello there! My name is Anja, and I am from South Africa, although I grew up and have lived in the Middle East for my whole life. I recently graduated high school, and am just starting my gap year, before continuing on to study biology at university! As such, I'm quite interested in sustainability and nature :)

I'm hoping to gain a bit of experience working in different fields and situations. I'd say my main goal through Workaway is to gain a bit more independence and see different cultures and ways of living, all to (hopefully!) grow a bit more as a person and widen my view of the world.

More details about my language interests
I'd like to improve both my Afrikaans and Spanish where possible, with conversational practice. Spanish is particularly a huge goal because I feel my opportunities to improve it once I start university will be much more limited.

  • More details about your skills

I finished the IB Highschool diploma, with a particular interest in all biological sciences. In specific, I did a research project investigating plant grafting and growth, which stemmed as an idea from helping my dad with his own personal garden projects. I also took computer science as a subject and particularly enjoyed that, coding through multiple programs and problems, which I'm proud to say I think is a fair technical skill of mine!

In terms of work experience, I've worked as a babysitter for a family in my local community for about a year (2 young boys), and tutored high-school biology classes while my teacher was away and I was still at school.

For 8 years I've played saxophone, and after all that time I'm proud to say I've earned a grade 8 ABRSM qualification in it. While I'm not taking lessons anymore, it remains a hobby of mine.

I've travelled to many different countries and areas around the world as a result of both family trips and school opportunities, which I am incredibly grateful for! I like to think that I'm quite open minded as a result of a lot of exposure to different cultures.

I'm quite passionate about animal welfare, I've both volunteered at a local dog training centre before, and done various fundraising projects for animal shelters. My experience in fundraisers and charities have helped me develop great organisational skills, in both event planning and execution.

I speak primarily English, and intermediate Afrikaans and Spanish. Afrikaans I learnt through exposure from my family, and Spanish as part of my school curriculum.

  • What else ...

Biology is what I hope to pursue and it is truly one of my biggest passions and loves. While it doesn't necessarily translate into what I can bring to Workaway experiences, I feel it's a big part of my person, so I thought it important for anyone reading this to know.

Music is also a big part of my life! As I've said I play the saxophone, and have enjoyed practicing a bit of guitar and piano when I can, although I wouldn't call myself a guitarist/pianist by any means. Music means a lot to me, listening and playing, and my spotify wrapped is definitely one of my favourite days of the year :)

I also love baking, both the process of creating food as well as sharing baked goods with others. My other interests include reading novels and generally discussing/analysing both classic and contemporary literature.

    Thanks for reading my profile!
