Hello! My name is Altan Mitchell. I completed my Master's in Business Analytics in June of 2024 and am now taking some time to travel.

I spent many years training seriously as a long and triple jumper so I love to be active and use my body. I have recently stepped away from the sport but I still find it extremely important to express myself through movement. Swimming, running, playing frisbee, and dancing are some of my favorite ways to move—and, of course, jumping!

I am passionate about understanding. I love interacting with abstract ideas and unique perspectives. My favorite way to gain understanding is through conversation and friendly discourse. My second favorite way is through reading and writing. I read mostly literary fiction and a little bit of philosophy, and I write all sorts of stuff, but my goal is to write a story.

I'm on Workaway because I want to connect more deeply with the places, peoples, and cultures I am visiting!

My most important skill, which enables all other skills, is my ability to show genuine curiosity and learn quickly. I am confident that, given a patient teacher, I can learn and execute most tasks at a high level.

I have experience with difficult and demanding manual labor. I have worked as a commercial fisherman in Alaska and a vineyard-worker in Marlborough. I can work hard and maintain a high level of focus for long periods of time, and I don't mind getting my hands dirty.

Through university and professional internships I have developed strong technical skills in analysis. I am comfortable using computer code to derive understanding and insight from data. Besides technical analysis, I developed strong communication skills in professional, academic, and interpersonal settings.

What else ...

In secondary school I worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry. I started by working at McDonalds where I learned a lot about practical customer service and assistance. Later on I started working at the restaurant of a hotel/marina. My second experience involved working closely with the rest of the staff to ensure the operation ran smoothly.
