  • Description

Hola!

    Vladislav

Hello! My name is Vlad, I am a recent graduate of a master's program in archaeology. Now that I am done my degree, I have begun my travels in South America, going through Chile, Bolivia, and Peru. I am interested in learning more about self-sufficiency, food cultivation, harvesting, animal husbandry, carpentry, foraging, and all other crafts and traditions that involve deeper connection to the land and waters. I am also interested in learning Spanish and learning about new cultures, particularly Indigenous cultures but also others.

Over the past two and a half years, I have been working on a project studying the archaeology of a small island in British Columbia (Lasqueti Island, or "Xwe'etay" in the Coast Salish languages), doing fieldwork on the island and analyzing the findings in a lab and on a computer. And, over the past year, I actually (quite unexpectedly) ended up living on this small, off-grid island of about 500 people. Living off-grid in a close-knit community has been a transformative experience, and I have learned so much about gardening, tending to animals, various off-grid power, heating, and water systems, making art, and all sorts of healing modalities from various traditions around the world. And, not to mention, the power of community and the tight-knit web of relations that is necessary for life on a small, off-grid island.

Prior to this program, I have lived mostly in Vancouver, although I have also lived for some time in France and Germany, and have travelled extensively in North America and Europe. My family is Russian-Jewish, and I grew up speaking Russian at home. Aside from my time on Lasqueti, I have also built many "outdoor" expeirences through archaeological fieldwork elsewhere, through volunteering on several different farms in Canada, and through various outdoor activities in Canada. Through my archaeological work, I have had the great privilege to collaborate with a number of Indigenous nations in Canada. Similarly, during my travels in South America, where possible, I hope to learn about the local cultures, practices, and people.

In my free time I love to read, write, bike, swim, cook, explore nature, and socialize.

    Thank you for reading!

    Gratefully,
    Vladislav
