Hello! I worked in finance & ecommerce industry for the past decade of my life & find myself needed to break from the routine for new interesting experiences, being open minded and embrace what life can teach me.

Here I'm on my career break and would really love to create some life long memories via building connections & memories with both hosts & other WAers, I'm a big believer of life is long enough when we have live & fill it with great contents, fascinating stories I can tell in the future.

I volunteered here on Sep24 for 3weeks, it was a bit bitter experience at the beginning as the place is rustic as Martin described in the profile but I arrived realized I didnt manage my expectation well enough. A city girl out of whatever reasons choose to experience living in a farm for the first time, in a tent that I choose for myself has some… read more hidden holes where water leaked in everywhere when it poured, especially some days it can be really windy and cold during the fall, my tent has the tendency of flying away some nights, open shower with inconsistent temperature and compose toilet, rusty kitchen (but actually almost fully equipped), it was really a challenge and I thought of leaving after just 2days.

But somehow I choose to stay to commit to the dates I agreed with Martin and I ended up got so comfortable having hard time decide when to leave. I guess all the first time I experienced here were both scary and exciting. Also a sense of community helped, other volunteers there during my stay were all very friendly, especially Celan who saw my struggle was being so supportive and taken great care of me. I learnt that one of my favourite memory here was cooking together and sharing communal dinners in the small kitchen with more than 10 other volunteers where I learnt about & tried different countries cooking & dishes, I also had great time harvesting chestnut, having conversations watching stars around campfire, playing board game, explored nearby towns with oktoberfest event & good ice cream, and explored state forest with other volunteers. I feel safe during my stay but I wont be able to say it's guaranteed because it's very dependable on people around, in the end it's an big open space orchard but it will always be great to have extra measures to enhance safety.

Martin is an easy going and wise person, I admire he's so grounded and thinking thoroughly in what he talks by speaking slowly most of the time, it was inspiring as most of the American I met speak really fast and the fact that we live in a fast paced world which is not necessary good for our nervous system. The working time was very flexible and self initiated, Martin never micro manage me in fact he was happy to share tasks I'm interested to learn around the farm like working on compose pile and detailed process of growing mushroom. He also tried his best to offer us fun experiences by organizing different activities with the kids like mulch balls game, brought us to the corn maze and visited the family orchard where he grew up, it's very impressive that this is a generational family business who truly believe in and promoting chestnut ecosystem and its benefits. Also not to forget Martin's kids are really smart kids to be around with, I will always remember how they beat every chess games a few of us played with them so effortlessly without even paying attention on the game board.

The orchard is very quiet and peaceful, especially in the dark the stars are really something. I enjoyed harvesting chestnut but it was almost end of the season so most of the fruits were gone during my stay, however I get to harvest some largest chestnuts I have ever seen which is almost my palm size, it was very impressive. Both the chestnuts and blueberries here are very tasty! I love watering the plants in the communal garden which has so many different herbs, vege and fruits, they gave me almost instant result of shining so differently the next day after I spent quite some time watered every single of them and truly inspired me to start my own mini garden later when I get back home, also enjoyed feeding & picking up the eggs of the farm chickens (I thought I learnt the trick of giving them more food = more eggs, one day I picked up a dozen of eggs from the same nest that I assumed it's from the same chicken).

Thanks again for having me, I will always carry the memories and inspiration here with me!

I volunteered at Ben and Thai's place on Nov24, initially planned for 3weeks and extended to 5weeks in the end. I was so grateful that they welcomed me with very short and fast communication when I had to arrive earlier than planned, even though they have another volunteer in the house at that time.

I love that Ben and Thai are both very easy… read more going and open minded person, they have been living in different countries in their life and ready to share their journeys and interesting life stories as American+Brazilian family. It was a very busy period when I arrived as Thai's family are visiting so we have 10 peoples living in the house the same period and the fact that they are not local grow up in Montreal, hence it was not always easy to catch them for casual chat and experience a local life, but they were very happy to share ideas to have fun around the city and share with me their roller skating equipments where I picked up very basic ice skating skill during my stay, we also visited some gay bar together just to have fun. It was fun to make memories together, the fantastic banana oat cake Thai baked for breakfast every morning was the first best thing I looked forward wake up everyday, and sometimes Thai's family will cook brazilian dishes to share with us while I will share some very limited dish I can cook.

The tasks were both very easy and enjoying for me, mainly spend time with Anton (and sometimes Sebastian), speak mandarin with him while taking him around (like send or pick him up from school and spend time in parks/musuems/library/bed time stories or any activities you get their permission to explore with Anton), also some light common sense household tasks like cooking/sweeping/mopping/loading washer/putting clothes to wash & fold etc. The working hours were roughly 5hours 5days a week, I have gotten great amount of time to explore the city, make new friends, picked up new skills and went some yoga sessions too. I shared the very comfortable double bed room with another volunteer, it was perfect we keep each other company in late night chats and ideas in exploring the city.

The only challenge was Ben and Thai was new host, when I arrived there was no structure around work, for eg work schedule for me to manage and expect my days etc. But it was all great after I raised the concern and with very easy communication we came out with a nice schedule & everything was just smooth. I also helped to develop some document for future volunteers reference to make things easier.

What I truly miss the most is Anton, he's such a cute smart and sweet kid, very impressive 3year old that speaks 4 languages, play very well ice hockey, and taught me a very cute French kid song (Bonjour les amis comment ça va) that I will always show off to every new French friend I meet. I will also always remember that day when we saw a cute puppy on the street and he learnt that I was upset when I lost my puppy years ago, he told me he will buy me a new puppy haha. It's definitely not the easiest thing to handle such a smart kid but anyone with passion and experience in taking care of kid will love him. I told Anton to visit me in Malaysia when he grow up, I hope he remembers!
Again, thank you for having me and made my memories in Montreal so sweet :)
