  • Description

    Hello!
My name is Sophia Kalmijn. I am currently studying Painting and Printmaking (BA Hons) at Glasgow School of Art. It is safe to say that I am a very creative person. I enjoy sharing my love for painting, drawing, sculpture and general crafts with others. I am also very motivated and outgoing. I am driven by doing things that I enjoy such as travelling, going outdoors and learning a new language.

I have done an exchange in France that will forever be in my memories. There’s nothing better than diving into a new experience. I helped to look after children and spent time with the whole family which consisted of two parents and two children - the youngest being 8 years old.

I have done 3 previous workaways: looking after an 11 year old in Barcelona and becoming a part of her family, looking after a 2 year old in Cres, Croatia and also working in a hostel in Split, Croatia.

I enjoyed cooking, helping out around the house, cleaning, trips to galleries and swimming. I find it fulfilling to work with others and meet new people. It is a great way to learn about histories and make new adventures.

I would be thrilled to join a work away programme to learn about each others cultures and lend a helping hand. I am very hard working and cope with stress well. I am keen to make the atmosphere light and full with laughter.

Additionally, I can speak confidently in Spanish and French, however, I do have a good skill for languages from growing up in a dual National household. Linked to this, I have both Scottish and Dutch citizenship. This makes it flexible for me to travel around the EU as an EU citizen.

    Hope to meet you soon,
    Sophia

More details about my language interests
My interest in languages stems from living in a dual national household. My father and Grandparents all speak Dutch making good communication a skill that I have grown up with.I am good at helping others with work and can teach English.I studied French and Spanish in school and would relish the opportunity to practise these. I was lucky to to have the chance to practice Spanish for 2 months while looking after children in Spain. . I think the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it. I can teach the basic of both of these languages. However, I am very keen to learn more. I am good at learning quickly and will always try my best and give things a go.

  • More details about your skills

Before moving out, I lived in a small village and was responsible for helping out at the local school and looking after children when parents were out. Through this I am very experienced with looking after young kids and enjoy too.

I have also worked in hospitality for over 4 years. As a result, I can cope with stress very well. I am also very clean and organised and a good team member. I think that laughter is the best way to bond a team. I also very much enjoy meeting new people and am very chatty and conversational.

I have also worked in hotels which requires a high level of professionalism and having duties to carry out for the smooth running of the wider operation. I continued to apply these skills when working away in a hostel in Split where I worked on the reception.

Aside from work experience, I have many other hobbies and skills. I am studying Painting and have won first prize in the Royal Scottish Schools Award for best portrait. I enjoy many other arts. For example, I am also a 4th year in the Juniors Acting programme at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and have performed in numerous in numerous shows. I thoroughly enjoy reading plays and watching theatre. I am also keen about the outdoors. I can kayak very confidently and have intermediate knowledge of kayak rescues.

I am very hardworking and enjoy making new friendships!

  • What else ...

I enjoy and am a confident swimmer. I also enjoy other water sports such as kayaking and have even been surfing and scuba diving. However, I could definitely do with some surfing teaching!

Related to my painting degree, I can confidently paint landscapes and portraits as well as deliver arts classes and lessons on art history. I am also experience in making sculptures in clay and photography. These are adaptable, whether this means making a puzzle or decorating a cake to making online brochures and digital art.

I can also teach how to be resourceful through kitting, sewing and crocheting. I would love to learn more tips.
