Description
Hi Im Sera! In September 2024 I will be flying to Japan! This is the first time I’ll be there and am so excited to explore the culture and nature. I will be traveling on a working holiday visa but mostly want to do workaways. I’ve had such great experiences doing workaways before so I’m very excited to explore Japan using workaway! I especially love that it connects you a lot more to the land and the people and well as other travelers. It’s nice to have a little family wherever you are and learn new skills.

Before I started studying Psychology in the Netherlands I took a gap year and did multiple workaways all throughout Greece. I worked in a dog shelter, in a community with multiple projects, and on a farm. Each one of them fun in the their own way and it brought me in contact with so many different types of people and taught me a lot of skills. I love animals and am a very big dog lover. Many of my friends can vouch for the fact that I will always be distracted by cute puppies and will want to cuddle every dog I meet :) As a family we also hosted two blind guide dogs and helped with their training. But I love all animals and would love to learn more about them. Furthermore I am passionate about sustainability and I'm pescatarian. As hobbies I love photography, so I'll likely take some kind of camera. The past year I've been very into film photography especially. In my gap year I also babysat two little kids and volunteered in a hospice! I just generally love taking care of people, animals, and nature and sharing good conversations :). In addition, I love learning new skills and would love to learn more about working on a farm and harvesting different types of plants. Im fully vaccinated and have my boosters for COVID-19.

I love travelling, not only because it provides a type of freedom and happiness and helps me live in the moment, but also because I get to learn so much about different cultures and areas and people. I also grew up very internationally as I was born in Canada and Grew up in the USA. But both my parents are dutch and I've lived in the Netherlands for about 11 years now.

Half a year ago now I went to Canada on exchange and also did a workaway there on a farm over the summer. I learned so much and made such good friends, some which are also in Japan and I’ll hopefully be able to see again :)

I grew up bilingual so Im fluent in both Dutch and English. I had many years of lessons in Spanish but I still am not very good because languages is not my strong suit haha. I would love to learn when Im travelling! I had a little Japanese in primary school but don’t know many words so I’m eager to learn more!

I love animals and have a lot of experience especially with dogs. As a family we hosted two blind guide puppies for a year and helped with basic training. Furthermore I babysit a lot so I'm good with kids and also volunteer in a Hospice. Im generally a very caring and responsible person. I also have a first aid certificate from the red cross.

In the summer I worked as a waitress so I also have experience working in hotels and restaurants.

Im also capable of basic skills such as cooking, cleaning, administration, etc.

In terms of hobbies, I love photography, cooking, singing, writing and art.

I would also love to learn about things like farming, caring for farm animals, renovating etc! On previous workaways I gained some experience working on farms and doing small projects but I would definitely love to expand on this.

I Volunteered for a month around April and had absolutely the best time there. As my first time doing volunteering through Workaway I had absolutely no idea what to expect and I could not be happier with the experience I got. Natasa is so incredibly hard working and kind and pours everything she has into her shelter, volunteers and especially the… read more dogs. Whenever there was a problem she was always there to help no matter how busy she was and she is definitely someone you can trust and rely on. She warned me when I came that it would be very overwhelming at first and that I would probably leave crying and she could not have been more right. The first day or two were a little hard because there is just so much to take in. But all the volunteers are there to help and within no time I felt at home. And not even to mention the dogs, I fell in love with all of them and had the best time taking care of them and learning more about living with a pack of dogs. And indeed when I left I could not stop crying (even the evening beforehand already) and I still miss this place deeply.

For the people who are interested in what the day is like, the hours of work are divided into two shifts, one in the morning and one in the evening. You start around 9 and finish around 12 and again in the evening from 5 - 7 (these time change according to the amount of work and the weather). The work is mainly feeding all the dogs and picking up poo and mopping. So be warned there is a lot of cleaning involved. But don’t let this put you off from the experience because you get used to it in no time and the bond you build with the dogs and the volunteers and the things you learn outweigh that by far. In the afternoon you have about 5 hours off in which you can take hikes around the area with a dog or just relax. There is also an amazing bakery in the nearby village which is definitely a must when your there. You also get two days off per week, mostly together with someone else in which it is nice to go exploring. The bus system is rather good there and I often went away for the weekend on little trips with other volunteers. There are some great places to see around the area which are especially easy to reach with a (rented) car but public transport is also a good option. I could not recommend this Workaway more, especially for dog lovers. Thank you so much for the great experience and I hope to be able to come back at some point!
