  • Description

Hello WorkAway travelers and hosts! My wife, Halie (Hay-lee), and I (Ethan) have been together for eight years and married for four. Our skills are as follows:

Halie was raised on a 300-head cattle ranch by her parents in the remote, pristine sandhills of Nebraska, USA. She was the oldest of 4 siblings, with one younger sister and two younger brothers. Here she learned many skills such as riding horses, feeding cattle, and birthing calves. Gardening and various ranch chores were a daily part of her life, and she even worked on a tomato farm and raised Boer goats on her own. As the oldest sibling, Halie took on the role of leading by example and passing skills onto her siblings.

Her love for her siblings and care for animals transpired to others. Halie left for college and became a Registered Nurse after graduating from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in May of 2016. Her seven years of expertise has spanned extensive time in the emergency room, medical surgical, and geriatric care. She has the wonderful gift of connecting with others, and caring for the elderly has been the most rewarding for her. Halie was even given the Daisy Award at her hospital after only being employed there 18 months. This special award is only given after being nominated by multiple patients for extraordinary care. She can bring this level of medical care and personal connection to whoever hosts she can stay with.

Ethan grew up in Nebraska as well, being raised by his parents and being the oldest sibling to two younger sisters. His family spent much time camping outdoors, fishing, skiing, fourwheeling, and river tubing. In addition to schoolwork and playing soccer, Ethan worked a variety of outdoor jobs growing up that included yard maintenance, concrete pouring for driveways and home foundations, shingling roofs, and siding homes. Working hard to play hard was a fundamental part of Ethan's upbringing, and this discipline shaped his teamwork and work ethic into his college years.

Just prior to attending university, Ethan and a group of fellow students raised money to travel to a rural mountain village in the Dominican Republic. Here, they spent two weeks assisting the local community building several new latrines. Participating in community gatherings and family meals was a daily privilege.

Ethan went on to graduate from university with a bachelor's in aviation management and a master's degree focusing on information technology - specifically, geographic information systems (GIS). Now, for over 10 years, Ethan has specialized in GIS for airports and electric utilities. His work has also led him to gain extensive experience in surveying, unmanned aerial systems, thermal imagery, and LIDAR. Beyond the technical work and consulting Ethan has been involved with, he has enjoyed collaborating with others the most. Project management, building successful teams, and educating peers and younger people is what he is most passionate about. His evolving and challenging career keeps him humble, and he loves learning from others.

As a couple, we very much enjoy the outdoors - especially sitting around a campfire! We enjoy good laughs with friends, meeting new people, and indulging in new experiences. Playing cards with friends is always a blast!

We can promise we will bring our hard work ethic combined with our fun and charismatic attitudes! We're ready to roll up our sleeves and help our hosts out for helping us along our travels!

We have been travelling since April, and the experience has exceeded all our expectations. We made it to the two basecamps of Kanchenjunga Peak in Nepal (The world's 3rd highest mountain) over a span of 21 days. We've continued onward through Southeast Asia, which has been a wholesome experience seeing all the history, diverse culinary dishes, and local cultures in every area.

We are new to Workaway, and we hope that you will give us a shot! We promise to do our part, respect your home, and have a good time.

    Thank you!

    - Halie and Ethan

  • What else ...

We are both from Nebraska, USA, and visit our families there often, but our careers have taken us to Colorado, USA. We have lived in Far-Western Colorado (almost Utah) for several years and absolutely love the dynamic scenery we are spoiled with here (mountains, canyons & desert)! We are lovers of the outdoors and escape work to go camping, overlanding, kayaking, mountain hiking, mountain biking, and fourwheeling as much as we can! We have even tried canyoneering in Utah which was an incredible experience learning to spelunk into a slot canyon with ropes and other gear.

When we're not out in nature, Halie and I have several other hobbies that take up our time. We are passionate about healthy eating and fitness, so we enjoy cooking new foods and exercising. We also have a deep love for music and have come to enjoy any genre to an extent. Although, we tend to go to as many alternative or indie rock concerts as we can!

We also love playing on sand volleyball leagues, playing board games or cards (pitch, euchre, up-and-down the river, etc.), and sitting around a campfire making good conversation. We love to hear stories from others and learning about other cultures and customs. Halie is a total nerd about trees, insects, and mushrooms, and likes to identify species with her books on hikes. Ethan is a geography nerd and can spend hours looking for points of interest on maps (old mines, ancient ruins, etc.) or reading expedition adventure books - (He's currently reading 'A Life Lived Wild' - by Rick Ridgeway).

If we do watch television, we love watching Anthony Bourdain. A good comedy is always nice for a laugh too. Since we are from Nebraska, we are passionate Nebraska football and volleyball fans. We try not to miss watching a game during the fall season!

Together, travelling is a major part of our life that we wish to continue pursuing. Our favorite place we have visited has been the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Here we learned to surf, learn how chocolate is made in the jungle, and tour a local butterfly farm that helps sustain populations for locations around the world. Ethan's next goals are to obtain his private pilot license, so he can fly in his spare time. Mountaineering is a hobby both of us look to still pursue in our lifetimes. At home, we plan to have a family down the road, learn to grow mushrooms, and hopefully (fingers crossed) have a greenhouse, sauna, and cold tub!

We are very clean and organized people. We hope to be able to design our own home someday, as we also both enjoy architecture and design. We will be very clean and respectful with whoever we stay with.

As a couple, we are both very ambitious and competitive with one another. We love pushing each other to succeed and there's always banter to be had with whatever we are doing!

Lastly, 2024 into 2025 will be our gap year for travelling parts of the world. This has been our life dream, and we hope to meet some amazing new people, and hopefully lifelong friends, along the way! It seemed to us like the best time to do this with our careers and not-too-far off plans to begin a family (children, cats, and dogs!).
