We are fixers and builders. We work side by side. We have built homes, additions, camps, decks. I am comfortable with wiring and most common plumbing work, including soldering copper or running PEX. We are familiar with most common building codes and techniques. One of our seasonal residences is powered by solar- only (no hydro) and we wired the home and installed the solar system. We have no physical limitations and we are used to working hard with long hours. Allison is a great cook and spent most of her career as a Counselor for both adults and for school children. We are Christians believing that people are placed in front of us for a purpose. We are very comfortable serving others. I am also handy with cars and mechanical work. We do not smoke or use drugs. We like to have the occasional social drink with others. We dislike snow and cold weather and we look forward to opportunities to help others.

Both my wife and I spent the better part of a month at Claire and Mack's home in Barbuda during November/December 2023. We have, like many North Americans spent past vacation time in various countries in resorts and on cruises. You cannot compare this Work Away opportunity to our past vacation experiences for satisfaction and adventure. This was… read more an amazing experience. Claire will allow you to be immersed in the local culture as much as you are comfortable with. She makes sure you are introduced to locals and shows you where to go for anything you require. Our room was comfortable and the food was fantastic. Claire goes out of her way to ensure guests are well fed and comfortable. She is very experienced with Work Away having hosted now for many years. We also interacted with Clair's daughters and grandchildren as we performed work at several locations for the family. For those Canadians reading this review, Air Canada flies directly from Toronto to Antigua. From there, you will take a ferry to Barbuda. Claire will guide you through getting there and returning.

There is only one town on the island- Codrington that is a 20 minute walk from Claire's. You can rent a vehicle, just down the road from Claire's for around $40U.S./day which is probably the most economical way to navigate the one bumpy road on the island as it will cost you at least $80 round trip to the pink sand beaches alone. There is lots to see and do on the tiny island. Local residents go out of their way to meet you. When we were there, the beaches were empty as this is winter for them, even though daily temperatures were over 30C (85F) everyday and the ocean water was very warm. Make sure you check out the caves, Codrington estate ruins and the giant sink hole.

This experience was exactly what we wanted...unlimited opportunities to help out and use our talents. It was very challenging to work with very little for building materials. Often we would be go onto another job while waiting for materials, as shipments to the island are only on certain days of the week. There is no Home Depot down the road so building materials are scarce, as well as plumbing and electrical parts. Our tasks were focused on building, repairing, painting and wiring projects. Claire is very good at planning your day so you never have to worry about being short of tasks. She also ensures you have time explore the island on the weekends and after working each morning. Overall, for both of us, this was probably the most rewarding vacation time ever for us.
