Portugal - from Jul 2024 until Dec 2025 View allDescription
Hey there!
My name is Richie,
I have a passion for nature and wilderness, yoga and community and art, and I am currently on my journey to learn about eco-building techniques and biotecture.
I have been living in the UK for 10 years now as a TV cameraman and photographer. This year I want to explore ideas around living a low impact life and transitioning into a thoughtful environmentally conscious person that I have always wanted to be!
My current goals are to learn more about sustainable building practices, and off grid systems - as well as taking more time to do yoga and explore meditation and breathwork practices.
I have recently completed a Permaculture design course in Portugal, and would really enjoy applying this knowledge.
I like to be adventurous and love hiking and climbing and anything to do with the sea or water. I do a lot of work abroad and enjoy very much meeting new people and getting involved in projects. I'm a hands on person and can build or fix most things and work with most tools. In former life have spent time at sea working on yachts, being a boat carpenter.
I also love cooking and making food! Would love to do more foraging. Wow this is starting to sound like a dating ad!
Anyway I love learning about how other cultures see the world and finding out how other people are enjoying their lives and the spaces around them.
I'm a massive fan of Couchsurfing so although new to this site not new to this type of situation. I love to give my time and enthusiasm in exchange for positive experiences for both sides.
I'm a hard working and conscientious and believe it takes two to make the world go round.
I hope to speak soon!

More details about your skills
I'm currently a documentary cameraman - but the skills I'd like to share and use the most for Workaway is carpentry / wood work / construction projects / landscaping gardening. Basically anything to do with making things with my hands. I am travelling around in my van with some tools.
In former times I've been a Captain of yachts and fishing boats, and carpenter and boat builder, I have a bit of knowledge on diesel engines and mechanics. And generally good at fixing things. I have worked on orchards and vineyards, and market gardens. I love cooking and preparing food.Age

What else ...
What else? Well I'm not sure what to add here, but I will add the reason for joining workaway: I'm really interested in Eco housing, environmental technology, and sustainable solutions big and small. I used to be more active in researching this and acting to stop pollution but recently I've been focusing on my career. I would like to reconnect with people that are thinking the same. I really want to learn new ideas around how we can live while thinking of the future. And get inspired to take these ideas back to NZ one day.

Richie is a pro when it comes to wood works and carpentry (I am sure with other stuff, as well, but there was no time to check that, during two weeks of his stay), and we clicked on the subject of esthetics, on top of many other things. Windows, single doors and massive sliding oak… read more
