  • Description

Hiya! I am a study abroad student from the UK and, looking for a bit of adventure (and to satiate a long love of Lord of the Rings), I have taken a year abroad in New Zealand. Everything from the landscape to the accent cemented it as must-visit destination on my bucket list and I was beyond thrilled when I was accepted for the year-long course here. Now I am eager to explore as much of the country as possible during the summer break and the Workaway setup offers an incredible opportunity to get to know the people and culture.

You should know I am an avid reader and writer with a love of adventure films and early modern history. I am currently taking and English and History joint-honours degree and, since being in New Zealand, have discovered a love for Fencing and hiking.

More details about my language interests
I am fluent in English, however I have unfortunately been unable to pick up another language. Although I was taught French and Spanish at school and attempted to teach myself German online, I find it very difficult to speak and understand foreign languages. As such, I would be interested in being introduced to a new approach.

  • More details about your skills

I grew up on a small family farm and, as such, I am very familiar with fowl. We have always had geese, ducks, chickens, and guineafowl and, at home, I was regularly involved with feeding, watering, and cleaning out their bedding. I also have experience dealing with pigs, cats, and have grown up surrounded by dogs. Currently, we have three dogs (one Flat-coated Retriever and two English Cocker Spaniels) and I have recently had the pleasure of looking after a litter of six puppies.

In addition to my familiarity with (and love of) animals, I also seasonally help my father out in his garden and vegetable patch. This primarily consists of weeding and dead-heading, but I have an excellent work ethic and am also interested in learning more so I can better help out. As we have a small orchard, I furthermore have experience in harvesting such fruit as apples, pears, plums, and berries and am unafraid of dirt and composting.

  • What else ...

As mentioned, I love reading, writing, film, television - really just storytelling in general! I have a special fondness for action/adventure, science fiction, and fantasy. I also take a keen interest in early modern and Victorian history.
When I was younger, I was involved in both Brownies and Girl Guides and joined the Police Cadets, all of which allowed me to participate in my local community. We would regularly perform fundraising campaigns and community services and it also fed into my passion for the natural world.
Growing up in the countryside, I enjoy being in nature and, since coming to New Zealand, have also come to really appreciate hiking. I absolutely love being around animals (especially dogs) and have recently been introduced to Fencing, which has become a highlight to my weeks.
I also have an artistic streak with a doodling/sketching habit on any paper I can get my hands on. I am particularly fond of pencil drawing and needle felting :)
