  • Description

Who am I? That could be a deep question but I’ll just keep this lighthearted. In fact that is one of my personality characteristics, actually, for starters, I love to laugh. Additionally I find joy in sharing experiences, skills, knowledge and food with people.

For 33 years I have shared my life with two wonderful people, my children who are now 33 and 29 years. So, I’m assuming it’s obvious my children bring me happiness. In fact, I have been a care provider and teacher to children since I was still a child myself.

It is easy for me to enjoy the simple things in life. The beauty of the world surprises and delights me, in nature, art, music, humour, community and creativity. Recently, I found myself marvelling at an early evening multiple dragonfly “dance” in the sky while I was on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. Pure delight!

Motivation comes easily to me when I have a project, an opportunity to form a connection with others and a purpose greater than my own needs.

My interests for many years have been gardening, cooking (it’s especially satisfying to use what I have grown); additionally I do paper crafting, knitting, sewing, candle making, and recently, basketry.

Rural life is very appealing to me, with my formative years living on a farm in the Fraser Valley and in the northern forests of the Nechako region both in British Columbia, Canada.

Though I have lived in the city of Vancouver for 40 years I still consider myself a rural person. For this reason I enjoy visiting friends on farms and islands in the area.

For over 30 years I have been part of a Co-operative Society called Community Alternatives and Fraser Common Farm.
The city building population has fluctuated between 38 to 44 residents in 9 apartment units, with a garden in the front yard instead of grass. (A very unusual consideration in 1979 when the building was built and still today in our city neighbourhood.)
The organic farm was originally 10 acres with one residence that housed 8 people. It is now 20 acres with 8 buildings, varying in size from one room to multiple rooms with all facilities. These buildings house permanent residents and seasonal workers.
During my years with the Community I was a resident of the building in the city and a member of the Farm collective. Throughout the years at both locations I organized and participated in management meetings, celebrations, fund raising, gardening, building maintenance, social activities for our group and the neighbourhood, additionally I worked at the Farmers Market.

My connection with the residents and the land at both locations remains strong even though I have moved to a new residence in the city.
Throughout the year my adult children and I still visit both locations and help organize annual celebrations. (In May I will hosting a basketry workshop at the farm for some current and former residents of the city building and farm.

Hopefully this little essay on me and my pictures will give you a idea of my personality, spirit, enthusiasm, humour and creativity.
If you have any questions please reach out to me.

Best to you and your loved ones,

    Lori

  • More details about your skills

Firstly, I wouldn’t define myself as an expert, my feeling is when I am teaching/sharing my knowledge with others we are collaborating and we are each learning about the different ways we think and create the “project”. If something needs to be done a specific way I usually let the student know why that is required and we talk about what would go wrong if the step is not taken. This style of teaching allows the learner to think critically about their choices. Anytime I am teaching I am aware of other learning that is going on besides the task at hand.
*Children care and teaching children are my strengths.
*Teaching Multiple “Life Skills”-hand and machine sewing, cooking, gardening, and other creative activities such as paper crafting, candle making, basketry, knitting, felting, beading, etc.
*Actually although I have no certification I have also shared my yoga and meditation experience and abilities with others.
