  • Description

Hello! I am Leonie, a joyful and curious optimist travelling the world. I live a free and nomadic way of life with my little backpack. I travel around mostly by hiking/hitchiking and love spending time lost in nature.

I am fascinated by nature. I enjoy observing and exploring the wild. Simply living with nature and everything it has to offer. I am very thankful that my current way of life allows me to be fully immersed in this world. I love it when I am somewhere on a mountain or in a forest, hiking all day and then finding the most beautiful place on earth to set up my little camp. I like to learn about the plants and animals that live in these wild places and imagine what their lifes are like. I can spend an incredible amount of time being amazed by everything there is to see. It is when I am surrounded by nature that I feel the most happy and peaceful.

Another aspect that I love about my way of life is the beautiful humans I get to meet. I think that exchanging with others and learning from one another is extremely valuable. This is one reason why I am hitchhiking and also what motivated me to start workaway. I would like to explore different life-philosophies and learn more about sustainable farming, living in a community, taking care of animals, living with nature, building and working with all sorts of materials, and much more. I am eager to learn from many different people and I look forward to getting my hands dirty.

My biggest hobby is food. I'm not joking, I really love to cook and try out new crazy ideas. And of course I love eating it afterwards. I'm looking forward to all the new delicious things I will encounter on my travels and to learn many more ways to create a delicious meal.

Besides, I love learning languages. Having grown-up in a French-German family, speaking multiple languages has always been the norm for me. I find that learning new languages allows me to rethink the way I see the world and helps me immerse myself in new cultures. This is also why I have recently started teaching languages myself.

I have a portfolio where you can read more about me and previous work experiences: bit.ly/Leonie-Wagner-Portfolio.

I love cooking. For me it is a creative outlet and my way of showing my appreciation to people. I have been cooking since I was a child and recently have spent 2,5 months in charge of a kitchen in a hostel/eco-living in Georgia. I was responsible for coming-up with and cooking breakfast buffets and vegetarian dinners for 20 to 40 people. I really loved working there and hope to get a similar opportunity again.

I spent 5 months working as a volunteer at the "Dierenambulance" (it literally means "animal ambulance") in The Netherlands. There we would drive out to wounded or sick animals, both pets and wild animals, to bring them to a veterinarian or to our rescue center. We had a rescue center for wild animals where I mostly worked with hedgehogs and all sorts of native birds (pigeons, singing birds, ducks and geese, crows, seagulls...). When spring came I also fed many baby birds and bottle fed baby rabbits. The daily work mostly consistent of feeding the animals, cleaning the wounds, cleaning the enclosures and making sure the animals were getting better. Through this work I have learned to evaluate the condition an animal is in, whether it needs immediate medical help and to which extend. It has been a beautiful and rewarding experience. I also learned so much about birds that I became a bit bird-crazy. Besides this, I volunteered at a cat and dog shelter for 1,5 months in Greece where I learned a lot about dogs and how to communicate with them. I also volunteered on a (big-scale) goat-farm for two weeks during the birthing period. So I helped out with bringing small goats into this world and helped them feed throughout their first few days.

When it comes to farming, I don't have a whole lot of hands-on experience besides planting some seedlings, plucking fruits and harvesting vegetables for dinner. However, I have always been around gardens since both my grandparents and parents have always had a vegetable garden and many plants at home. I am definitely interested to learn more about growing one's own food in a sustainable way. I would also love to learn more about all sort of food preservation. And I do love cooking, so I am more than happy to help out with that.

I would love to learn more about building. I am a fast learner and very enthusiastic about picking up some skills in this domain. During previous workaways I've helped set up fences, building a shed, fixing a metal roof, making natural roof insulation, building a stone wall and fixing old walls with cement.

Finally, since I love languages and learning about new cultures I would be more than happy to share my knowledge about them and learn about yours. I am currently following a TESOL course to become a certified teacher.
