Helloo!
I'm Kayla - a 27 year old sun-chaser and restless explorer from South Africa - trying to experience all that is strange and beautiful across the world. I love quality conversations, spontaneous adventures, immersing myself in nature, and getting to know places slowly. I have lots of passions including hiking, running, literature, the ocean, activism, art etc etc etc.
I work in NGOs and development charities with a background in global health, international relations, and conflict. Currently a researcher and policy advisor in global health at a charity!

I love nature and am fit and outdoorsy, so I'm keen to learn any gardening or DIY tasks! I've done a farming workaway before and loved working out in the fields, preparing produce and assisting with meals. I have lived on a sailboat for a short time which gave me some understanding of sailing, and I am very keen to learn more.
I also am a very friendly, people-person so I thrive in a hostel environment. I have worked reception, bar, party promotion, decoration, social media, and general hostelly things, as well as working as a waitress.
I've been a political science teaching assistant as well as a tutor, so I am comfortable teaching and spending time with both kids and adults.
I've volunteered and worked in many NGOs in communications, research, social media, and project support, which has given me a range of relevant skills and interesting experiences!
Some things I’ve done through Workaway:
- worked reception, bar, handled guests and baked bread at a hostel
- prepared fields, harvested and planted crops, and gardened on rural farms
- worked at a dog sanctuary
- painted signs and a yoga platform
- created posts and ran social media accounts
- promoted parties

What else ...
I'm a nature girl at heart, and love running (especially in the mountains), hiking, and spending weekends away camping with friends 🏕 I have recently gotten into free diving and beginner sailing and now want to become a part time mermaid.
I also love reading and scribbling my thoughts - I never leave the house without a book and my journal - and am always looking for people to chat about interesting things with! I could rant about social issues and activism and exploring all day.
My other interests include dancing (so many types but recently salsaaa!), making (mediocre but fun) art, climbing, surfing, playing board games etc etc etc.
