  • Description

I like to be in nature, to feel connected and in tune with the natural world. I’ve spent time on various ecological projects in the past (in UK, Europe, India & Jamaica) and I also lived off-grid for a year on a remote peninsula West Scotland,UK. I grew up in the countryside, near the sea (West Cornwall,UK) - and I feel most relaxed when I am surrounded by green and blue.

I've helped on some eco-building projects here and there over the years and am always keen to learn more as one day I hope to build my own house.
(I did build a little woodland home in Scotland when I was there that I lived in for 6 months. We only had hand tools and limited materials.... Life was tough but also beautiful and satisfying.)

I’ve done WWOOFing and Helpxing in the past so am familiar with the concept of work away, although I am new to the site. I really enjoy travelling this way as I like to feel part of something and like I am being helpful and contributing.

I enjoy being creative - I find creative expression not only enjoyable, but necessary... it brings me joy and gives me purpose. I mostly write (stories, poems, articles...) nowadays but I also like to make visual art and play music here and there... though I’m a little out of practice with both. You can read more about me and my creative work here: www.josephinehall.org

I have been told I’m a good listener, good mediator and easy to be around and talk to. I hope this is true :)

Sometimes I like to be quiet and observe.. I am a writer after all... and I do need reflective time to myself to recharge. That said, I can also be very sociable! I love getting to know new people, hearing and sharing stories, have fun and be silly, dance and sing and play... yet am equally happy watching a sunset in absolute silence.

I’m a hard worker and have worked in many paid and voluntary roles including... writer, teaching/leading workshops, admin & marketing assistant (for creative projects), waitressing, personal assistant, care worker, teaching assistant, eco-building helper & assistant on courses, charity fundraiser, mystery shopper, looking after animals, delivery driver, caterer, bar person, helping in gardens & general outside jobs, activity leader, trek leader (equestrian)...

  • More details about your skills

I think perhaps my biggest skill is that I am adaptable, hardworking and very keen to try and learn new things.

I have a degree in Art & Creative Writing (which also included some elements of music and encouraged crossing over of creative disciplines).

I’ve self-published a book, as well as having been published in anthologies (with poetry and life writing), online and in magazines (articles).

I’ve worked with children in various settings - school, summer activity things, care work...
I’ve also done things like care work and personal assistant work with adults who have additional needs or need help in some way.

I have grades in piano (am a bit out of practice though) and some knowledge of music generally.

I’m qualified to teach English as a foreign language... though I haven’t actually done it all that much. I’m more comfortable one-to-one or in an assistant role.

More recently, I have led creative writing workshops with an organisation called Creative Future, in Brighton. I got really good feedback and look forward to doing more.

I grew up riding horses and am confident riding and around horses... and happy to look after all animals. I’ve also lived with and helped look after goats ( i love goats!) chickens, cats, dogs, sheep, pigs...

I have some experience of eco-building. With straw, with cob, with wood. I can cut down trees and axe wood, but most experience is with hand tools. I’ve volunteered on an Earthship building course and on a cob build with a local eco builder.
I can make a fire. I can sleep happily outside!

I love to swim and be outside in all temperatures.

In various volunteering, working and living scenarios, i’ve helped with gardening and growing food... I’ve generally been assisting and not in charge so would need some direction... but keen to build my confidence with leading this :)

I like cooking veggie food and also love learning new cooking skills. (I'm flexi-tarian and eat some chicken and fish but also happy to eat vegan)
I’m good with people. Listening, and helping people work through thoughts and feelings. Also have been told I’m good at mediating and helping people resolve conflict - with themselves as well as with others.

I really like to be helpful :)

  • Age

    34

  • What else ...

I like playing games - especially ones involving words and stories or creativity.. though will probably need reminding of rules!

I’ve helped on some permaculture related projects and am keen to learn more. Anything i can learn about living lightly on the land, more self sufficiently and connected to nature...

I also enjoy yoga, and try to stretch daily...
Meditation also, I find helpful and would be interested to learn and practice more.
