  • Description

Hi! My name is Joris, I am a 23-year-old girl from Berlin, Germany.

I'm taking a break from university between my Bachelor's and Master's. I study English literature and work as an editor here and there along the way.

I have some experience with Workaway (and also WWOOF). I have mainly done voluntary farm work: 3 months on two different farms in Scotland, one month with an animal rights organisation in Germany, and one month on a vegetable farm in Denmark (plus I have also had a job as a harvest hand in the asparagus harvest in Germany). I have some experience in harvesting all kinds of veggies, from radishes to pumpkins, and all the work that goes along with that, including weeding, preparing beds, etc. On top of that, I have taken care of cows and horses, and helped out with some building and carpentry projects (renovating rooms, building raised beds, restoring old furniture, building a pier).

During my stays on these farms, I learned to appreciate working with my hands and I love being able to see the result of my work in front of me at the end of the day. I'm always happy to obtain a new skill, so I'm eager to learn whatever you can teach me! I love getting to know people with all sorts of different stories and backgrounds, and I'm always happy to join in on a game night or any other social activity, but I don't need to be entertained. Also, I consider myself a decent cook and baker, so I'm always more than happy to help out in the kitchen!

I am definitely looking for some farm jobs in Canada, but would also love to branch out a bit and try to incorporate my other interests. As you may be able to guess from my field of study, I am very interested in languages and literature - and art in general. At the moment, one of my main foci is the representation of gender and the environmental crisis (or: crises) in literature. These issues are important to me also outside of the literary world, and I am always interested in getting to know new perspectives and discussing different views.

Other than that, I enjoy walks and swims, yoga and good stories, whether they be told around a campfire or in the form of a book or movie. I am excited to see where the wind blows me!

In Scottland, I worked on two different farms: first with cows, then with horses. Apart from taking care of the respective animals, I did a lot of weeding and hedge cutting as well as some building (for example a pair of raised beds) and helped redecorate a room and refurbish wooden furniture (meanig days and days of sanding ;)).

I learned how to harvest asparagus and deal with customers during my time at the asparagus farm in Germany, and I spent some more time taking care of animals with the animal rights organisation in Germany, where I was also responsible for their vegetable garden.

In Denmark, I helped harvest fruits, herbs and vegetables (from Basil to Hokkaidos) and spent a lot of time weeding beds and preparing them for new plants as soon as one harvest was over. I also helped out in the farm shop.

I love cooking and baking and am happy to help out wherever you need me. I'm always happy to learn something new!
