Hi there! I’m Jo, a high school teacher who’s traded the lovely streets of Luxembourg for a working holiday in sunny Australia! 🌞 But my time in Australia now came to an end, so I’m getting ready to explore South East Asia before I head off to New Zealand for another adventure!

I’m a curious explorer who loves all things outdoorsy. I enjoy diving into new cultures and soaking up life like a local (especially if there’s yummy food involved!). I’m excited to learn new skills and meet awesome people along the way. Let’s make some unforgettable memories together! 🌏✨

I've been teaching philosophy in German, English and French for the 3 years in a high school in Luxembourg (mainly to 17-22y olds).
During my stay in Australia I have been working in a hostel, where I was hosting several different activities (Bbq, Pancakes, Painting etc.) as well as in a restaurant doing food preparation and training new staff.
I also have experience as a tour guide, youth leader and all-rounder and was volunteering with organisations that support individuals facing housing instability.

I don't even know where to start!! At first, I didn’t know what to expect, but I certainly didn’t expect to have such an incredible time. Teaching local students of all ages, learning about the culture and Islam from both teachers and students, going on amazing trips, and spending time with the most incredible people—who I now proudly call my… read more friends—made this experience unforgettable.

So, what can you expect as a volunteer?
You’ll typically visit 2–4 classes a day, six days a week, across different branches all around Jakarta. Most of your time will be spent at Jatibening, the main branch, which is conveniently close to the dorm where you’ll stay during the program. You’ll live alongside some of the students and teachers, creating a unique bond as part of this community.

In the mornings, you’ll go on trips—visiting the Istiqlal Mosque, National Library, Museum of Textile, or even Bogor. Afternoons are spent teaching, with classes ranging from children and teenagers to business professionals. Evenings are for connecting—whether it’s chatting with the students you live with or enjoying dinner and trying delicious Indonesian dishes. You’ll also have time to prepare your lessons (don’t hesitate to ask the teachers for help; they’re more than happy to assist!) and work on personal projects or explore your surroundings.

I can’t say it enough: I had the best time. From dancing with the kids and immersing myself in Indonesian culture, to learning about Islam, to trying incredible Indonesian food (a huge shoutout to Ms. Geofani and Ms. Aisyah for introducing me to vegan-friendly Indonesian dishes and to Khalif for always keeping me stocked with tempeh!), to being guest at the Webinar talking about how to overcome the fear of talking to foreigners, to shoots for social media and advertisement (thank you for your patience btw).
A special thanks to the amazing content creator team who instantly made me feel at home, taught me so much, and welcomed me into their team like family.

Big thank you go to Khalif, for always checking in and ensuring I felt comfortable - to Aisyah and Geofani, for all the food adventures and for taking me to karaoke with Aditaa and Firza - to Ocho and Rinto, for our insightful private lessons on Islam, gym sessions, afternoon coffees and dinners - to Firza, for introducing me to a French bakery and giving me a little piece of home. To everyone in the office, for welcoming me with open hearts and making me part of their family. And last but not least to Paper Moon, keep it up guys, I can’t wait to see you on stage when I return!
To every beautiful soul I met and shared stories with during my time: terima kasih!

I didn’t know what to expect at first—certainly not that it would be so hard to leave! But I’ll be back for sure. For now, I’m just grateful for the amazing opportunity to have been part of this place and to have had such an enriching experience!

Thank you for everything: for making me feel comfortable, for teaching me more than I could ever teach you, for helping me learn Bahasa, and for making me a part of your incredible community.
