Description
I am Jana and 32 years old. I was born in Germany and after finishing school and traveling through Europe I studied Social Work in the Netherlands. During and after my studies I worked with people with disabilities in their own homes and children and young adults in the forest and outdoors. I concentrated on adventure education which means more or less learning from activities in groups and nature. Afterwards I did an additional education "nature and wilderness pedagogy" (making fire, crafting with primitive tools and natural materials, tracking animals, collecting wild plants, cooking on bonfires...). I love to be outside and spent as much time as possible in nature. I think nature is the greatest teacher. But I also think we all learn from each other and in every interaction. In the last years it became more and more important for me to grow my own vegetables and to live a simple and self sustaining life in harmony with nature. I would like to collect new experiences and get to know different ways of living, be inspired and inspire. I like crafting and working with wood and natural materials. I have little experience in building wooden constructions and bioconstruction (clay and straw) and I would like to learn more about building with natural materials. I have gathered experience in organic farm work in Australia, Portugal and Germany before. I like to work in the garden, seeding, planting, taking care of plants and trees and animals, picking fruits and harvesting vegetables. I would like to learn more about processing fruits and vegetables, traditional methods and natural building methods as well as alternative ways of living in harmony with nature. Within the last year I lived and worked on a farm in Germany, taking care of vegetable and other plants, fruit trees and sheep. Now I feel it´s time to travel again and for some new experiences.

I studied Social Work in the Netherlands and have about 10 years practical experience in this area. I worked in schools, homes and in nature, with children, teenagers and adults with a disability, in Germany as well as in Central America. I worked for three years for an NGO that coordinates several projects in El Salvador, in the social and health care area and in agricultural and environmental projects. I have an education as a "wilderness teacher" and like to work outside, in nature and with humans and groups. I have gathered experience in farm work in Australia, Portugal and Germany. Within the last year I worked on an organic farm in Germany mainly taking care of fruit trees and sheep and a vegetable garden. I like to work in the garden, seeding, planting, taking care of plants and trees, picking fruits and vegetables and processing them. But I am not professional in that, I learn from experience and follow my intuition. I have little experience with natural building / bioconstruction (clay and straw and wood). I like to enjoy what I do and want to do it good, but I don't do everything perfect and I don't try to be perfect. I like to learn. And I like to work with natural materials and what is around and given from nature.

I am very much a outdoor person and like to spend as much time as possible in nature. I think nature is the greatest teacher, but we can all learn from each other. And that's what I would like to do. I am very interested in other humans and alternative ways of living (especially sustainable and in harmony with nature), but sometimes I also need time and space for myself. I like to get to know other countries and cultures.

I am very grateful for the month I spent with with Korina and Guillermo and Arnaya, Bhanu and Rocky. and Shane, the other volunteer, I got to know there. Korina and Guillermo are wonderful and very inspiring humans, both individually very interesting personalities with a lot of knowledge and skills and… read more different qualities. They are also a beautiful couple and wonderful parents to their little daughter. I felt welcome and comfortable in their place and family from the very beginning. I like and admire the way they live and how grateful and respectful they are towards nature. For me it was the perfect place to arrive to and slow down after almost a year of travel. I liked what we did and I learned a lot, about (medicinal) plants and trees and construction with the local natural materials, about living off grid in the amazon jungle, about the culture there, about living in a family and also about myself. The work we did together or sometimes also independently was very diverse and interesting. But this is definitely not a place were you are asked to do a certain task for a specific time and someone runs behind you with a clock. It's different, it's much more, it's way better. Time is different there. The jungle is timeless. Of course there are daily or regularly tasks that need to be done when you live off grid and there were also some bigger and smaller projects we worked on, finished and started. But you are also free to come up with your own ideas and realise a project you would like to do. Guillermo and Korina are very open and grateful for ideas and they appreciate if you take initiative and everything you do that improves the place and contributes to the community / family life. While I was there we worked in their chakra, we planted together, improved the soil, cleared a space to start a new chakra, cleaned the lake.. we also did some work on the ongoing constructions and I learned how to weave palm leaves for the roof. But we also cooked and ate together (the food is always healthy and so delicious!!), exchanged ideas, shared thoughts and feelings and some wonderful moments, like the ceremony with the offering for the lake. I enjoyed the jam sessions, yoga and a wonderful sound healing session with Korina as well as crafting together or drinking cacao. Not to forget the chocolate and peanutbutter balls! I also appreciate a lot that Guillermo was constantly feeding me with material and ideas for crafting projects. But besides of the work and time we shared, I also had a lot of time and space for myself, to explore the place and surrounding, to walk, to craft, to rest and reflect. They have beautiful houses for the volunteers to stay and their whole place is very nice. Falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle, music of nature, under a blanket of stars - so healing. Healing like the music, words and hugs and the whole time I spend there.

I don't know how to end..
I would really like to come back one day, to see Arnaya walk and talk and climb into trees, to harvest a piña I planted, to swim in the lake, to celebrate another ceremony and to give you all a big hug!

I stayed 2,5 weeks at Rauls place. The place itself and the cabañas are really beautiful surrounded by nature and tranquility, which I enjoyed a lot. I also liked, that I had lots of space and time for myself. The work varied from day to day and most days it was not too hard, but I was asked to do some easy jobs around the cabañas. I also helped a… read more bit with the construction of a new cabaña, which I liked a lot. I wished I could have done more of that construction work, but I am not professional in that, I want to learn about that... still I got the chance to help with a roof of palm leaves, what was really interesting for me as well as walls and doors out of Guadua / bamboo. Some days I also cleaned plátano and yuca in the fields.
At times I was missing clear and open communication, but maybe that's a result of cultural or personal differences. After a few days I asked to talk to clarify expectations, tasks and working hours, what helped me to get clarity about that. The family of Raúl was very friendly to me and concerned about my wellbeing. I could join his uncle to fish in a traditional way, which was really interesting for me and I also liked to spend some time with the children, searching for fruits and digging for insects in tree trunks. I tried many things I have never eaten before, like chontacuro and fruits from the forest. Raúl and his family members know a lot about the local animals and plants and their use. It was great to learn from them.
All in all I had a good time with Raúl and his family - and also by myself resting and relaxing in such a beautiful place in nature.

Estuve 2,5 semanas en el lugar de Raul. El lugar y las cabañas son muy hermosas rodeadas de naturaleza y tranquilidad, que disfruté mucho. También me gustó tener mucho espacio y tiempo para mí mismo , nadar en el rio, hacer fuego.. El trabajo variaba día a día y la mayoría de los días no era demasiado duro. Raul preguntarme que hiciera algunos trabajos alrededor de las cabañas. También ayudé un poco en la construcción de una cabaña nueva, que me gustó mucho. Lastimanente No podria hacer más de ese trabajo de construcción, pero no soy profesional en eso, quiero aprender sobre eso... pero tuve la oportunidad de ayudar con un techo de hojas de palma / lissan, lo que fue muy interesante para mí, así como paredes y puertas de guadua / bambú. Algunos días también limpié plátano y yuca en la chakra.
A veces me falta la comunicación clara, honesta y abierta, pero tal vez se deba a diferencias culturales o personales. Después de unos días pedí hablar para aclarar expectativas, tareas y horas de trabajo, lo que me ayudó a tener claridad de eso. La familia de Raúl fue muy amable conmigo y se preocupó por mi bienestar. Pude acompañar a su tío a pescar de forma tradicional, que fue muy interesante, y también me gustó pasar un rato con los niños, buscando frutas y insectos en los troncos de los árboles. Probé muchas cosas que nunca comi antes, como chontacuro. Raúl y los miembros de su familia saben mucho sobre los animales y las plantas locales y su uso. Fue muy interessante aprender de ellos.
En resumen, pasé un tiempo muy bien con Raúl y su familia, y también con mi mismo en la naturaleza descansando y relajándo en un lugar muy muy bonito. Estoy agradecida.

En marzo pasé casi dos semanas en la finca de Gloria ayudando a plantar arracacha, yuca y aloe vera. Gracias por aprender juntos y por la deliciosa comida! Gloria se preocupó mucho de que tuviéramos todo lo necesario y de que estuviéramos bien. Los voluntarios tienen su propia casa con cocina y todo lo que necesitan.
