  • Description

    Hello,

We’re Jade and Mark. We left
our home in Salisbury, UK in June 2023 to embark on a long trip around South America. We joined WorkAway in 2018 as we were getting ready to leave the UK to travel through New Zealand and Asia; a trip that lasted a glorious fifteen months.

Whilst in New Zealand we had the pleasure of undertaking two WorkAways- the first was a week spent helping a wonderful couple in the South Island who we're still in touch with now, to do gardening and wood chopping and the second was helping out on a dairy farm with a lovely family on the North Island. They both left us incredible feedback which you can see in the feedback section.

From March 2020 until January 2023, we rented a big allotment (land) space. Mark did an amazing job at turning it into a wonderful haven for wildlife and produce from the overgrown jungle it was when we started renting it and dedicated time there on most days sewing seeds, tending to our growing fruit and veg, watering, harvesting and doing all the other hundreds of jobs that come with having an allotment. Jade was in charge of sectioning off one part of the allotment to create a wildflower meadow and tended to enjoy sewing seeds and harvesting the fruit and veg but mostly, eating it all!

We are each spiritual in our own ways and have the upmost respect and appreciation for our planet. We are conscious to reduce, reuse and recycle everything we buy, we shop sustainably and limit our plastic use. This appreciation has led us to take great pleasure in noticing and responsibly enjoying the nature, flora and fauna around us and our favourite past times are camping, hiking and visiting new places. Mark led a project within his role at work, to make the company more sustainable. We have both been involved with various volunteering days with local conservation charities.

We initially wanted to join WorkAway to meet new people, submerge ourselves into something new and challenging and experience new things and exiting opportunities. 'Living locally' and embracing different cultures is a big ethos for us when we are travelling and we have found that undertaking a WorkAway is the best way of doing just that.

Since travelling in South America we have undertaken 2 WorkAways; the first was in Ecuador doing general house maintenance such as cleaning, painting and varnishing. The second was in Peru, working on a conservation nature reserve which included clearing land, helping to construct a reservoir, watering plants, planting seeds and working with the community. Both Work-Aways were wonderfully positive experiences which has made us eager to continue finding more Work-Away opportunities as we continue our travels.

We both love yoga, nature and the outdoors and are down to earth, hard working, organised, open minded, friendly, flexible and honest people. We are quick learners, eager to get stuck in and also try new things. Jade has a side hustle, borrowing people's dogs to walk and look after to satisfy her love for dogs and volunteers at an Oxfam Bookshop each week. Mark is a talented map reader and navigator and is a great leader with all things outdoors and camping.

We look forward to meeting you!

    Jade and Mark!
