  • Description

    Hey there!

I'm Gema, originally from Spain but I've been living in Sweden for the past three years. I just finished a bachelor on Human Rights and will head in the fall to a year-long ESC volunteer in social work in Germany. Before that I have pleeenty of time to find a cool project to commit to for some weeks at least or a month.

I am able to adapt to plenty of situations and people, to communicate clearly and kindly, and I believe to commonly show understanding and sympathy to my surroundings. I enjoy exciting socialising, drawn to people with thrilling life projects and lifestyles, but of course I enjoy the time alone, for instance solo traveling. I can share a home with others and enjoy it. I hope to keep moving and finding new places to live, from vacations to longer periods, so this form of traveling is just fitting.

I am reasonable, responsible, and ambitious; I hope to develop a career in the fields of international development and human rights, which translates often onto life choices and interests. In this case, I would be interested in participating in some social work project in the South of Europe (I've seen some ads here and there). It is also of course why it seems that the Workaway community might be a fitting way for me to travel, explore the world, and meet people, as it seems to be for the most part built on similar values and community-based action.

At the same time, I enjoy animal company to a ridiculous amount and have been wanting to volunteer at an animal shelter for years now, meaning now might be the time.

Regarding work abilities, I am quick to catch onto routines and tasks, perfectly fine at following instructions and at working in teams, which I developed mostly working hospitality jobs. I've a reasonable sense of voluntarism and regardless of whether it is a restaurant job or volunteering at an ngo, I will find things to do without having to be pushed at every turn. It would be my first workaway experience, however, and since I do not have previous experience either in animal shelters or farms, my relevant skills begin and end at cooking (vegan/vegetarian). I am however a creative individual and I have worked as a dog-walker on the side for the past years, so I hope I do know something about dealing with stranger dogs.

I would be happy to connect anytime and see if our needs fit!

  • More details about your skills

Regarding handy skills, I am quick to take on crafty projects, from building an admittedly ugly cat tree to painting a mural on a wall, handsew the holes in my jeans or painting my shelves and chairs whenever the room needs a change of vibe! I also drift in and out of drawing and painting, depending on the season :) I also enjoyed photography for a while although that is a bit on the side now. I am decent at graphic design of posters or social media ads.

I enjoy and search for animal company as much as I can, and I think I do well at understanding and reading their needs for space but also meeting their playing time demands (particularly dogs as that is what I am most familiar with). I have worked as a dogwalker for 3 years now and have therefore trained how to slowly build relationships with grown dogs to whom I was a stranger in the beginning, gaining their trust and getting to know their needs and traits.

I enjoy cooking for others and will readily organise a chill dinner party. I have worked as a kitchen assistant in a restaurant for the past year and a half but I do best at home with vegan and vegetarian recipes.

Both my written and spoken English are advanced, as it has been my daily language for the past three years, including my academic life. I have also worked as a translator English-Spanish and viceversa, in case that is of any help. Spanish is my native language, and I surely enjoy teaching small things here and there to any curious ear.

Regarding education, I started but did not complete a Fine Arts degree, which regardless provided me with some of the described creative and handy skills. Lastly, I have just completed a multidisciplinary bachelor degree on Human Rights, which has delved into international law and politics as well as the fields of philosophy and sociology as they relate to human rights fundamentals and conflicts. I have also been involved in student associations such as LGBTQ Malmö, organizing events etc. My academic interests and aspirations and my everyday-life decisions meet often as is natural; I am a conscious individual about lifestyle choices such as consumption, transport, eating, and relationships, all led by the striving to reduce suffering to a minimum within my abilities. Aaand I just I have basic critical thinking skills and a reasonable character which I believe make working and living with me quite easy-going and at least a little bit fun ;))

Other than that I'm eager to learn any useful things you can teach me!
