Hello,

My name is Fien. I am a 22 year old Belgian girl who just graduated in dietetics and nutrition. I haven't decided what I want to do career wise, so I saw this as a perfect opportunity to start out as a workawayer.
I really want to explore as much of the world as possible, and traveling has always been one of my favorite things to do. I love spending time outside in nature. Doesn't matter if it's hiking, surfing, laying on a beach or in a field, working outside... as long as I'm outside I feel happier. Even better if there are animals involved! They always make me feel at peace and I love spending time with them. We have 2 dogs and 4 cats at home and sometimes I can't get enough of them.
As my degree suggests I also really love food. Cooking and baking are activities that I really enjoy. Discovering new foods or different cultures trough food is something I am always excited about!
Besides that I also really love reading, especially in novels and fantasy books I can completely loose myself.

In generally I am still really curious about a lot of things. I want to try and discover as many new things as possible before I try to live in a way society expects from us.

I haven't had a workaway experience yet.
During my studies I had a few internships: I helped in a commercial kitchen, worked as a dietitian in a hospital in Suriname and worked in a food technology company.
As a student I also did different kinds of jobs to earn some extra money: I worked in a pizzeria for 5 years where I worked in the kitchen and did the register, helped in an industrial bakery and I have some experience in different kinds of stores.
I am not a big handy-man since I don't have any experience in that area, but I would love to learn! Getting my hands dirty doesn't scare me.
I'm a social person and not afraid of interacting with people.
The same goes for animals, I'm even better with most of them than with humans :)

A very sweet and gentle presence, easygoing, respectful and hardworking.
We could tell she really cares for all the animals in our shelter and for sure she was brightening their days by making them company.

I had an amazing first workaway experience here!

I planned on staying here for 3 weeks and I ended up staying for more than a month.
I’m not sure where to start. It’s just so incredible what everyone here is doing for all the dogs. The way everyone knows everything about all the 50+ dogs, how every dog is treated with love, how they make sure… read more they have everything they need like food, water, blankets, medication… It is truly heartwarming how much love, passion, and time everyone puts in to taking care of all these animals.
Besides taking care of the dogs, the volunteers are also really taken care of. Everyone is open to help if you need anything. The kitchen is stocked with almost anything you can think of and if you need anything else they will bring it for you. The amount of fresh food that was brought by everyone was amazing. The amount of fresh bread, pastries, cake and homecooked meals I ate here is crazy xp.
Also the bathroom and the caravans have everything you need, from towels, to sheets and working clothes. Which was really nice!

About the work. At first all the information you get can be very overwhelming, but after a few days everything becomes very clear. Once you worked a few shifts you really get the hang of everything. During the shifts you really have to work, but I didn’t mind. I was just happy to be surrounded by dogs at all times! 😊 Everything that is in the description about the work is really accurate.

During my free time I spent a lot of time walking in the area with one off the dogs. The nature around the fort is really nice, and a walk to the closest beach is around 30min. The national park nearby is also amazing to visit!
It was also really fun to take one of the available bikes and discover the further surroundings.
There is also a bus stop nearby where you can take the bus to Pula.
I also spent a lot of time in the cosy living room/kitchen just reading, cooking, baking and spending time with the other volunteers.
The communication is great. There is a WhatsApp group with all the volunteers where everyone sends the most important things.
It is also really clear when you have shifts and when you have a day off. Everything is written on the board in the kitchen.

I only left a few days ago, and I am already missing everything about it. Especially all the cuddles and kisses from the dogs.
I can only recommend this place and I hope to come back here during the summer!
