Hello!
Hi, I’m Emma! I’m really excited to be volunteering again. I first did Workaway in 2020 during a gap year before starting school, and I completely fell in love with it. Since then I’ve been balancing school, work, and traveling as much as I can, and am finally graduating in May.
While in school, I've had the chance to study abroad on three different continents, including semesters in Prague and Kyoto, as well as a recent two week design trip working with an NGO in Kilifi, Kenya. Those experiences really shaped how I like to travel—with intention, curiosity, and a focus on understanding communities and the spaces people live in. I recently received grant funding for a post-grad research trip through Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, where I’ll be exploring public spaces and street life in cities along the historic Silk Road. I’m planning to start that in August, which gives me some time after graduating. Instead of jumping straight into a job, I’d love to slow down a bit and spend time contributing in a more hands on, meaningful way.
Outside of school, I love anything creative or outdoors. I’m pretty adaptable and always happy to jump in wherever help is needed. I also grew up with my mom running a Montessori preschool out of our home, so I’m very comfortable with kids and genuinely enjoy spending time with them. My past Workaway experiences have included childcare, as well as helping with pets and farm animals. I’d love to use my design background if it’s helpful, but I’m just as happy pitching in however I can.

We love painting, whether it’s canvasses or walls, and have a lot of experience doing both. Additionally, we each have spent several years working in restaurants and kitchens, and Emma especially can somewhat cook, which she enjoys. Our family used to have a little veggie garden and did a farmshare at a local farm. Emma did a workaway taking care of animals and gardening, and Julia worked for four months on a melon and pepper farm in Australia.
Growing up, our mom had a Montessori preschool she ran out of our house. We both grew up around kids, and when we were old enough, babysitting and summer camps became our first jobs. We love being around kids, and like to think we have fun together.
We are hardworking people, and always willing to try new tasks and get our hands dirty!
