  • Description

    Hi!
I'm Avery and I've lived in New York City my entire life. I graduated from university in May of 2020 with a degree in Environmental Studies and a minor in Philosophy. And I was lucky enough to study abroad at the University of Stirling in Scotland in 2019. During my semester abroad I absolutely fell in love with Scotland and the UK.

For the past two years I have worked at both the Brooklyn Botanic garden and the Queens Botanical garden in New York City. I was an instructor teaching children and adults about plants, bugs, sustainability, and plant care.

Despite being a city girl my favorite place to be is within nature. I love being outdoors experiencing different types of landscapes, plants, and animals. When I'm outside I like to enjoy nature by going on long hikes or just going for a walk in a park. And when I want to be a little more active I play rugby. I love to read, write, play guitar and be creative. Making things has always been fun to me and I am looking to learn through experiences.

I read books about local wildlife like bugs, plants, and animals. I am extremely interested in learning about your local wildlife and will never turn down a conversation about the natural sciences. I enjoy going to botanic gardens and natural history museums. Lastly, I have been a vegetarian for almost 9 years but have no problem cooking meat or being around meat.

I want to go on a workaway so I can meet new people and learn new skills. I believe that traveling is one of the best ways to improve yourself and grow as a person. I am very excited to meet you and learn everything I possibly can about your way of life, culture, and country!

I am fully vaccinated against Covid19.

I have a lot of experience working with kids. During the pandemic, I worked as a full-time nanny for 7 months. I was looking after two amazing girls aged 5 and 7. I was with them 5 days a week for an average of 8 hours a day. They were both doing online learning for a majority of the school year which meant that I had to keep both girls on track throughout the school day. I assisted them with their zoom classes and homework. After school, I always made sure to get them out of the house for a bit. We would go to the park most days or go on a bike ride. When their schools switched to a hybrid schedule I would pick them up and sometimes drop them off in the mornings. And on days that their mom would be out of the house at night, I would cook them dinner and get them ready for bed.

I just finished my third summer working at a sleep-away camp. During my first two years working at camp, I was a general counselor. I spent my days teaching boys and girls, age 5-15, skills like skateboarding, rugby, pottery, guitar, and archery. However, this past summer I was a senior staff member which means I was given more responsibility and was expected to solve any issues that came up. I feel very confident with child care and really enjoy passing on any knowledge I have.

During the pandemic, I was also hired to create a rooftop garden on the lower west side of Manhattan. I was in charge of planting the seeds and starter plants, designing the layout of the rooftop garden (greenhouse, planters, and seating), and training the employees on how to care for the plants. I started that job as a hesitant beginner gardener and it taught me so much. And I am looking forward to learning even more about gardening through a workaway, and possibly sharing some of my own gardening knowledge.

When I'm not in nature I enjoy making art, doing crafts, and reading/writing. I am a confident knitter, painter, embroiderer, and potter. On top of that, I also love to read and write poetry and short stories. When I was younger I played the guitar in a few bands with other kids. Even though I don't practice nearly enough anymore I will still teach myself a new song every now and then.

Lastly, I have some experience with power tools because I used to build sets and props for theatrical performances in high school. I would create things every day ranging from building a desk to creating fake groceries to fill a store on stage.
