Description
My name is Asenath, I am 32 years old and I'm currently living in Olympia Washington in the United States. I am an artist, nature lover, and someone who thrives best when I'm able to be involved in community in a meaningful way.
This year I'm taking some time to travel in Latin America because I've been wanting to reconnect with my most genuine self and also with the culture of my Peruvian family. I've been feeling myself being called more than ever to specifically connect with the culture and language of my Andean ancestors, but also am curious to learn about and support the preservation of so many indigenous communities' practices, regarding farming, crafts of all kinds, healing and so forth. Unfortunately my grandparents passed away when I was young, but I deeply value learning from elders and hearing their stories. I'm so grateful for the perspective these relationships give me and the sharing of the knowledge required to understand how to work with the natural world in harmonious relationship. While I travel I also plan to do a small project about recording local folklore and/ or traditional healing practices.
What I value most in life is caring for relationships. To me that means relationships with people, animals, the earth, projects, and really everything. The more time and attention put into understanding and working with someone/ something, the stronger the connection we can form and the better the two entities can care for one another. I think this is how positive transformation can really come into being.
Recently I've been making screen prints and ceramics to sell at markets for my work. I always love working on my personal creative projects, however I've really been dreaming of participating in community art projects for some time. A couple of years ago I was working and volunteering at a community art center in New Mexico where I helped facilitate creative programs, and get free art supplies to people in the community. This was one of the best times of my life, just getting to witness everyone's free flowing creativity during the center's open studio days and watch people building relationships with one another and their art practices. I was so thrilled to be able to support the community at this art center which highlighted being a space for anyone to come make art at no cost, and especially making space for unhoused, neurodivergent and other people experiencing marginalization in society. I'm passionate about making sure that there are opportunities for everyone in a community to have access to a safe art-making space, education and materials.
I also love doing gardening, farming, botany, learning to care for animals and various ecological projects centered on conservation/ education for community. I can do some basic wood-working and metal working. I love working with kids, and queer youth as well. I am an intermediate Spanish speaker with a goal of becoming fluent. I would be happy to do language exchanges with folks who are wanting to learn English, or tutor. I love to cook and would be happy to help the hosts cook meals/ take turns making meals.
Some of my personal creative skills are, Painting (I have been most interested in painting murals/ leading community based mural projects), Print making (including screen printing posters or on tee shirts!), ceramics, sewing, drawing, tattooing, music (I can do some audio production and recording), writing, and etc.
I'd be so happy to put any of these skills to use while at my work-stays!

What else ...
I'd love to highlight that I'm really interested in learning plant medicine made from local plants and about traditional indigenous healing practices. I'd love to learn about natural dyes from plants, how to process animal hides/ wool, weaving and traditional crafts of all sorts! I also want to learn about the local folklore everywhere I travel and about the folk music of the region.
In my free time I like to read, write, go camping, make art for my friends, sing, cook and be in nature.
One thing that might help to mention here is that I have some dietary restrictions. I don't have severe allegories to any foods, but these one will upset my stomach. It's pretty easy for me to avoid these foods in Latin American cuisine. I CANNOT eat: milk, cheese, lentils, wheat, barley, peanuts, soy (in large amounts), oats, chicken eggs, coffee.
*I CAN eat all vegetables, fruit, meat, seafood, corn, rice, beans, quinoa and most other common foodsSome more information
