    Description

I am the Manager in Northland, New Zealand for seven reserves for the trust. Our trust buys land on the margins of ecologically significant forests and restores them back to native forest ensuring that the sometimes endangered species that live within have an extended protected habitat to flourish. My tasks include making sure that we control introduced pest animals and plants and planting eco-sourced trees for future forest. We are guardians of 4 reserves surrounding the Waipoua Forest which is well known for it's stunning kauri forest and in particular Tane Mahuta - the world's largest tree!

I am 40 and have worked in the environmental field since 2020 alongside my partner who I share a business with. We raise our 8 year old daughter on our land in Whangarei Heads to think about the impact we have on this Earth.

Our organisation relies on conservation focused contractors to carry out tasks within the 7 reserves under our management. Three are based at our Waipoua HQ for the winter-planting season who will host work-awayers,\. This means sharing the accommodation and living quarters, preparing food together and helping you navigate local attractions for recreational outings. You will get the opportunity to be immersed in what conservation looks like in New Zealand whilst living and working in an ecologically significant part of the country. You will learn new species, some endemic to Northland, NZ and be part of the solution for mature kauri forest that was cleared during the colonisation period.

    Accommodation

At our headquarters we have a comfortable 3 bedroom house that is available to workers with wifi and a lovely fireplace! It's fully set up with everything you could need alongside the garage that has all the equipment we need. Plants will be helicoptered into the reserves, plus we have a quad and a side-by-side vehicle for equipment so there is no need for arduous lifting.

Our team - Kelly, Alana and Zara live approximately 2 hours drive from our base. During the weekends they will return home, but during the week there will be at least one of them to host. Food costs (as well as accommodation) will be covered for you as part of our exchange and cooking responsibilities can remain flexible. Sometimes you may have a meal cooked - other times you are free to cook yourself and treat the accommodation like your new home.
