We started long back in February 1992, in the Rajmahal hills of Jharkhand, India. The project shifted in the present location, in the plains region of the same area, near Roldih village, on 15th April, 2005.
We have been active in educating the tribal and non tribal children of the surrounding villages and have succeeded in making the parents feel the need for quality education, which is sadly lacking in the area.
Our school covers a big area where we had planted over a 100 trees. The whole area of the project is full of trees and plants of various shapes and sizes. The school is primary level and volunteers from all over the world have been coming down the years and staying with us, some of them coming back afterwards also. The teachers stay on the project and the kids come and go.
We have living quarters for the volunteers and the food is vegetarian mostly. The volunteers take part in teaching the kids English which is very much in demand and drawing and music and dancing, which the kids love. English teachers are not easily available around the area, that is why we welcome the volunteers to impart their knowledge to the poor kids, who can, with the help of the language, rise and shine in their future careers. Also the cultural exchange and exposure is very much welcome.
The volunteers also take part in gardening, cooking Indian food and learning in the process, painting the walls, giving extra tuition to the less intelligent kids after school hours etc. The volunteers also interact with the teachers and teach them spoken English and in the process learn Hindi from them. We charge $5 per day per volunteer in return of food and accommodation for the volunteer.
Cooking / shopping
Volunteers are expected to teach the children in the school at primary level, do some gardening, cook Indian food with the teachers who stay on the project and in the process learning cooking and the Hindi language from them. The volunteers can teach music and dancing and drawing/coloring to the kids and coach the weaker students in their spare time.
Hindi, English, Bengali
We have accommodation for at least 6 volunteers and we provide beds, matresses, pillows, mosquito nets etc. There is a western toilet for the volunteers but the water has to be pumped from the tubewells on the project. Internet access is limited and we dont have electricity and the lights use solar power which also charges the mobile phones.
The area is situated near a village and there are other villages nearby. The nearest big town is one hour drive and small town is 30 min walk or 150/20 min on bicycle.
Limited internet access
We have pets
We are smokers

In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteer‘s stay. (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.
