Hi all! My name is Sadie and I'm excited to join the Workaway community:) I'm an inquisitive and adventurous individual who is always looking to explore new places and learn new things. I am enthusiastic and hard-working and will 100% get behind whatever task I am doing.

I am happiest when I am surrounded by people I love or when I am in nature (bonus if it's sunny and there's a nice view)! I am inspired by meeting new people and hearing about the things they are passionate about. I love discovering new ways to make a positive impact, both within community and the world as a whole. I'm always searching for ways to grow and improve as a person, to better my relationships and the way I relate to the world.

I'm passionate about sustainability and environmentalism and am eager to learn about new practices I can incorporate into my daily life. I love to cook and have been a vegetarian/pescatarian for 8 years so I am always on the lookout for more delicious plant-based recipes. I'm also interested in learning about foraging and cooking from scratch so if you have any tips or tricks I'm open!

In my spare time I like to crochet and do other crafty things (and would love to pick up more skills or share my skills with others!). I've recently got into bouldering, but haven't had the chance to get outdoors and climb yet so this is something I'm hoping to try! I'm also a big animal lover. I believe that all creatures great and small deserve our respect and kindness. I have a dog of my own back home (who I miss very much) so, if you have pets, I will be very happy to hang with them!

I'm originally from the UK but I have just completed a year-long exchange studying in Montreal (Tiohtià:ke). I've previously travelled a fair bit around Europe and got to have some amazing adventures and meet great people along the way. This is my first time using Workaway and I'm excited to have some fully immersive travel experiences and learn about cultures that are new to me!

Was könntest du arbeiten?
I enjoy taking care of animals and have some experience dog training.
Very comfortable with kids and have 2+ years tutoring experience (including kids with diverse educational needs) so always happy to help with homework etc.
I love to cook (+ know some good veggie/vegan recipes), so I can help with the cheffing or cook for you!
I have some sewing skills (though I mostly have sewed by hand) and crochet so I can help you fix old clothes or make new ones ;)

Most importantly, I'm extremely enthusiastic and keen to learn new things!! So whatever the task, be assured, that I will give it my absolute all and learn from your wisdom!

I'm always down for board or card games, and interesting conversations about life or philosophy or anything. I'm usually more of a listener than a talker so I'd love to hear stories about all your adventures (though I'm happy to share too). I like to escape technology whenever I can (i.e. phone, laptop) though I am increasingly bad at this.

I'm a queer woman and it is important to me that you cultivate a safe space free of any kind of hate or discrimination. I'm open minded and always interested in meeting people with differing views to me but respect for human rights is an absolute non-negotiable (and a commitment to fighting injustice is very important).

Vom Workawayer (Sadie) für Host (Immersive family farm ...)

I stayed with Kirsten, Blake, Asher & Nahko for around 3 weeks in June. This was my first workaway experience and it was absolutely everything I could've hoped for! They are a wonderful family living in a beautiful place, and I learnt so much from them all.

She would offer lots of tips on the best way to complete tasks, both for efficiency and for my physical and mental wellbeing, which I really appreciated. I loved seeing her passion for her garden and for the natural world as a whole, and I'm so grateful that she shared her knowledge and experience with me. I have learnt so much more about the world around me, and have begun to practice a new way of being present in, and relating to, nature as a result of my time there.

My stay was slightly different to usual as Kirsten went away for a couple of weeks, so it was just me, Blake and the boys. Blake is a very calming presence, incredibly knowledgeable and a fantastic storyteller. I felt very comfortable, and was able to be very self-directed in the work I did, as he was super flexible and relaxed. Asher and Nahko are very sweet and mature, and it was a real pleasure to hang out with them (the endless games of ball tag only tired me out very slightly I swear;). They are super respectful, creative and helpful around the property, and it was really inspirational to see the values they are being raised with and the positive impact they are already making in the world.

I completed a wide variety of tasks throughout my stay (weeding, watering, sifting & shovelling compost, harvesting flowers & fruit, clearing the forest trail, clipping back bushes, stringing up tomatoes in the greenhouse, drying herbs, freezer inventory and more). Kirsten left me with a list of tasks to do and clear instructions, so I could choose how to organise my days and when to complete my hours which I really liked. The work was really enjoyable and generally not too physically demanding (and even when it was, they encouraged me to break it up with less demanding tasks in-between so it was fine). I was expected to be mostly responsible for keeping the kitchen clean and organised, and I often helped Blake with meal prep when Kirsten was away. I felt that this effort was really appreciated, and Blake incorporated any extra things I helped out with into my hours so it never felt unfair. Food was always provided and I was encouraged to help myself to snacks and tea (they have an incredible tea selection) whenever I wanted, which was very kind of them. I had my own bedroom with a comfy bed, and I often had lots of free time in the afternoon and evening to spend how I liked (hanging in the hammock was awesome).

Kirsten very generously lent me her bike, so I was able to explore lots of the surrounding area this way. It's very navigable if you don't mind some hills. There are lots of beautiful lakes, beaches, hikes and inlets nearby. Kirsten took me to Durrance Lake a couple of times, which is a great swimming spot with a beautiful forest trail. Elk Lake, Island View Beach and Todd Creek Inlet are worth a visit and all accessible by bike. Sidney is reachable by bike and bus, and has lots of cute charity shops, book stores and cafes (plus a pier), and Victoria is also nearby. I hiked up Mount Work and Bear Hill (much shorter option if you're just in search of a good view). I also got to go to a free mini music festival in Victoria and a night market just outside the city, so it's worth checking facebook events (or community pages) to see if there's anything fun going on during your days off.

The Hunters live with the cutest dog, cat and llama! who provided lots of cuddles and entertainment and really enriched my stay:) (Edmund not so much with the cuddles, but that's ok).
I really had the best time staying with this family and would absolutely recommend to anyone who is interested in learning more about farming, self-sufficiency and indigenous eco-centric philosophies in amongst a beautiful landscape, immersed in wholesome family life.
