Update: after traveling three years in Europe,I will be back November 2024 to January 2025.
I am a ESOL (English as Secondary Language) teacher from Maryland, USA. My first career was in IT for 15 years working on databases, website, data reporting. Since my daughter went to college I got rid of my possessions and am hoping to see the world. I enjoy hiking, swimming, cooking, gardening, traveling, learning, and having nice conversations with people from different cultures... currently I am slow traveling through Europe.

vom Host (Volunteering at a house farm ...) für Workawayer (Michelle)

It was a pleasure having Michelle at our home! She will surprise you a lot with her cuisine, typical Chinese. She is very interesting to talk to and has an open mind. My daughters had a great time with her and wrote down all the recipes she made for us! We wish you the best on your travels.

Vom Workawayer (Michelle) für Host (Gardening and painting in the ...)

I stayed with Anja for 10 days helping with gardening and cooking. She was a caring and generous host. Even before I arrived, she asked me what I would like to eat for the breakfast and took me to the grocery store on my first day. She allowed me to rest when I first arrived after my sleepless overnight transportation. She showed me where things… read more are in the kitchen and made me feel at home. Meanwhile, she read me the house rules on a piece of paper which I carefully followed. In my opinion, I think it's necessary to have rules for every workawayer to follow. She shared places to visit and the trails to walk, which I appreciated greatly. She asked me to do some garden work which was easy and from time to time, she even stopped me from working too hard. I appreciated it so much and wanted to do more work for her by offering her to cook meal on a day that she suggested me to go out. I told her that no problem, I still can cook after I came back from visiting another city. I was sincere wanting to help her by cooking the meal since she really enjoyed it the previous day. However, for some reason she wanted to cook herself and declined my offer. I said there would be no problem if I cooked. But since she declined, I respected her by not cooking that day. I think she took it as I wanted to be in charge. But that was a misunderstanding of my intention. Afterwards, I explained to her and I thought we had cleared out the misunderstanding. But only after reading her review below I realize maybe it was not the case. She stated that she knew I have good intention but she also said that our characters clashed. However, when I was in her house all she said to me was how she appreciated the work I did for her. She was very satisfied with the garden work I did for her. She never mentioned anything about what she was not comfortable with, instead, she even wanted me to visit her again. I think she had tried her best to be a good host. She did not want me to wash the laundry myself, and instead, she did my laundry and even hung my laundry. That made me a little uncomfortable because I wanted to do things myself like doing my own laundry and hanging them. But since it was her house, I respected her request. Anja is a kind and caring person but at times, it was kind of intense and it made me feel like she was trying to be my mom. But I believe she has every good intention.
Thank you, Anja, for hosting me, I just wish that you were being transparent with me how you felt when I was there. That way there would not be any misunderstandings. But I hope for the best for you.

Though she has been travelling for some considerable time beforehand.

Michelle is used to working alongside new people, and is good at communicating.
