Hi, I'm Marine!

I'm French American, and also lived in Japan. I just graduated from college in Boston with a B.A. in Media Arts Production (specializing in documentary filmmaking) and am now on a gap year!

My absolute favorite thing in the world is to immerse myself in new communities, meeting people with different ways of seeing the world and learning new skillsets! I recently spent almost four months diving at a marine conservation NGO in the Philippines that collected data on reef health, and over four months on the largest Arabian horse rescue in the US as a ranch hand and horse trainer intern. Next year I'm planning on volunteering on some cattle ranches, and also getting an EMT license!

I'm a hard worker and enthusiastic team member, used to community living (both with family and strangers) and rural living. On this gap year I'm hoping to experience as many different environments and ways of living as possible, since before continuing a career in journalism, I really want to experience different facets of life and see how different people live and think, to grow as a person and as a storyteller.

Otherwise I love being outside, looooove reading, love learning new things, and love challenging people to handstand competitions :D

I absolutely love being around people, and am used to doing a wide variety of hands-on tasks. I take on any project with both a "can do it" attitude and a willingness to learn and adapt to however you would like the task done. I'm used to working independently but also love working as a team, and in my college experience, where I worked on different film projects with large crews, I became very used to working with lots of different personalities. Working on set also definitely instills the mentality that no task is too small, even the details help the big picture run smoothly!

I'm a very creative-minded person, so I love DIY projects, and am also comfortable with more physical labor. I absolutely adore all animals, especially horses. I am an endurance rider, and got to spend some time assisting as a horse trainer as well. Distributing hay bales in 115 F heat is something I am familiar with haha. Growing up, I spent my summers and winters unleashed in the countryside with my 20+ cousins, fixing up different treehouses with scavenged wood and the tools we borrowed from my grandfather who was a farmer before he retired. I'm used to being active and having tasks to do, even when it's hot and stifling. And in our household, children were in charge of keeping our spaces clean, so I am more than familiar with all household tasks.

Otherwise, my primary skill set lies in audiovisual creation. I've created content --from promotional videos to logo animations to short documentaries-- for multiple brands, garnering 300,000 + views. I'm proficient at everything from filming on professional cameras to editing with Adobe Suite and marketing via Instagram or Youtube.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join a passionate team ...)

I will never forget my time at this place, and will definitely be back to see what’s become a California family! I was initially planing on staying 1.5 months and ended up staying almost 3 months.

I came for a real ranch and rescue experience, and that’s without a doubt what I got! I experienced everything I was hoping to and more: e.g. the… read more daily grit of ranch work (hay and water), working with horses to get them under saddle, doing training rides for horses, vet visits, farrier visits, animal advocacy, the culture of rural life in the US, and endurance ride events across three states! Thanks to the English riding experience I had, I was able to participate in multiple 25 mile endurance rides, and even a 30 mile ride, which were very intense but definitely got me addicted to endurance riding. I learned so much about “farm smarts,” about everything that goes into caring for and training horses, about how to read horses well (that mostly comes with just getting to spend lots of time around horses), and overall became a much more confident rider and knowledgeable horse lover. I’ll be forever thankful to Vera for her generosity, and forever inspired by the grit of Vera, her daughters, and the other helper around the ranch Liz!

If you’re interested in coming to stay here, I would definitely recommend staying more than a month. It took me 3-4 weeks to feel like I’d gotten a handle on how everything worked, so I feel like my real experience of being able to contribute and not just learn really started a month in. I wouldn’t have been able to experience everything I did if I hadn’t stayed as long as I did, both because the events are spread out and because you need to accumulate knowledge to be able to fully participate. That being said, there were a lot of volunteers during my stay who only stayed a month and were very satisfied with that length. Either way, I would recommend only coming if you’re fully ready for a *real* ranch experience, which also means long hours of both physical work and waiting around, animals in living quarters, rural standards of cleanliness, having to work with lots of personalities and opinions, and overall a learning curve that can sometimes be intimidating, but is so, so worth it if you push through it! If you’re a driven person who takes initiative, are easy-going, and love horses and all animals, you’ll fit right in.
