I’m Marlena - currently travelling across Europe and soon heading towards South East Asia for a few months to learn more about the culture and spend some time with like minded people.
I’m an experienced bartender, waitress and vegetarian chef - passionate about cooking vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free meals for both small groups and large gatherings (up to 100 people!). I love creating food that’s colourful, nourishing and made with care. I’ve also organised community dinners, pub quizzes and social events, and I genuinely enjoy bringing people together around good food and conversation.
Alongside that, I work in social media and digital marketing — I manage online content, engage with audiences and have experience with SEO, website updates and hospitality platforms. I love helping projects and places tell their story online, so I’d be thrilled to contribute to your online presence or help manage your bookings.
I’m also an artist and painter and I enjoy creative projects like murals, refurbishing spaces or adding artistic touches around hostels and cafés.
Outside of work, I’m curious, open-minded and love to connect with people from different backgrounds. I’m passionate about yoga, meditation, hiking, swimming, cycling, and anything that involves movement and nature. I’m reliable, easy-going and respectful of other cultures and ways of life.
I’d love to share my energy and skills while learning from others - whether it’s in the kitchen, behind the scenes of a business, or helping create a welcoming, inspiring environment.

vom Host (Join our creative hostel ...) für Workawayer ()

HOSCARS

1st hostel is located in a historic area of Tirana, in a traditional old building which has been renovated in a way as to maintain its historic and cultural significance. Here we are passionate about bringing the local customs and traditions to our guests through traditional events, food, dance and drinks. Every day the hostel’s Nana will… read more cook a traditional Albanian breakfast in the morning, and classic traditional dishes from all over the varied historical areas of Albania for dinner in the evening. Nothing in Albania is more traditional than eating the foods of our ancestors together as a family.
Twice a week we open our kitchen and our hearts for travellers to learn these traditions with Albanian cookery classes, allowing people to not just taste Albanian history but to learn to replicate it themselves. At the weekends we host events that include teaching Albanian dancing and the basics of our language, we also take great joy in introducing the guests to the many styles of music, dance and dress of the country.
Our goal at the Hostel is to bring the history and traditions of Albania to our guests and keep a close connection between the local community and the rest of the world.

2nd hostell is a new hostel located in a predominantly local area of Tirana. Due to this, we always try to work directly with local businesses and with local residents. In the less than 2 years since we opened, we have established a working relationship with local bars, restaurants, tour companies but also directly with our neighbours.
We have hired cooks, seamstresses, tour guides, bartenders and anyone we feel can bring together our local residents with our international guests. When we reopened 18 months ago, we took an empty property that was only occupying space in an already overpopulated city. Now we provide not only employment to local residents and new income streams for local businesses, but also a direct bridge between those of us who call Tirana home permanently and those who only call it home for a short while.
Every day, we encourage guests to explore local bars and restaurants to enjoy traditional Albanian food, music, and dance. We’ve also partnered with locals who produce traditional food and beverages, helping them reach the growing number of visitors to Tirana.
Recognizing Albania’s limited recycling infrastructure, we’ve developed a small-scale initiative to repurpose recyclable materials while supporting low-income residents. Each day, some locals, struggling for money, will collect plastic bottles and metal cans from dirty communal bins, and bring it miles outside of Tirana for a small monetary incentive. So, we established a working relationship with some of these people to provide them with clean plastics and aluminium cans for them to take without having to search trough trash bins to find them.
Overall, we are aware that as a tourist hostel, in a local neighbourhood; we can either help the community or ignore it. We want to work together and will always look for ways to do so.

Marlena was an absolute joy to host. She arrived in the first few months of us hosting volunteers for the first time, and helped to transform the place into what it has since become. She has an incredible energy, that transfers to both the staff and the guests. She has given help, advice, and spiritual guidance to so many of us... as well as starting the first ever yoga classes at our hostel! Somehow through all of these extra activities that she did OUTSIDE OF HER WORKING HOURS, she was also a tremendous worker and communicator, helping others (both staff and guests) feel comfortable in this shared space. She also is a terrific cook, making veggie/vegan food but also helping us all to learn about cooking for people with allergies whilst still maintaining delicious and wholesome food appropriate for everyone. Marlena has already come back to visit us multiple times but i already cant wait until the next time!
