Hello Workawayers!

I'm an Australian gal currently six months in to a year’s travel across South America, Central America and Europe.

Before leaving for this trip, I worked as a graphic designer / art director in Melbourne, Australia, and had the privilege of working with various charities to help them elevate their fundraising efforts through compelling visual storytelling.

To keep my creativity flowing while travelling, I illustrate and am currently working on a portfolio in preparation for my next venture: learning how to tattoo.

It’s not all aesthetic interests though. I also love; freediving, scuba diving, meeting new people, animals, and learning. On my travels so far, I’ve actually been learning Spanish which has really helped to deepen my interactions and experiences.

While I value a good laugh and appreciate humor, I also appreciate openness, meaningful conversations, can-do attitudes and organisation.

Having volunteered overseas previously, I'm looking forward to my first Workaway experience, eager to contribute my skills, learn from others, and immerse myself in new environments.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help at our small hostel in ...)

I had a lovely time helping out at Juan's hostel for just shy of 3 weeks.

THE ISLAND AND HOSTEL
San Andres island has been a little quieter than usual since the pandemic and the weather event in 2020, so the hostel had a very relaxed vibe. The hostel is just near a small beach and only a bus ride away from some great freediving / sunset watching… read more spots on the west side of the island. Though there isn't an abundance of things to do on the island and it can be a little touristic, it's still a very beautiful island outside of the main town, and you can get around very easily by bus, moto taxi or walking. There are lots of supermarkets and restaurants, so whether you enjoy eating out or cooking, both options are available to you.

THE WORK
The work arrangement was quite laid back and flexible. Usually I'd clean and take on other maintenance projects in the mornings — such as weeding the courtyard or peeling paint from outdoor walls — then I'd have the afternoon to myself, come back to do a light clean in the evenings, then have the rest of the evening to myself. If you have common sense, basic cleaning knowledge, initiative, and don't mind some alone time, you can do this Workaway.

THE HOST
Juan was very helpful, communicated really well, and really just wanted me to have a great time on San Andres. He has two gorgeous little kids and a lovely wife who were all super warm and friendly. Although Juan and I communicated in English, I was able to practice my Spanish with his daughter who's around 4 years old — she is hilarious. Challenge her to a game of chess if you dare, being mindful of course that she actually has no idea which way the knight can move haha. I was also lucky enough to join Juan and his family a couple of times for lunch. Spending time with the family and seeing them together was the highlight of my stay and gave me a glimpse into the true island lifestyle.

THE ACCOMMODATION
I stayed on premises in a dorm most of the time, which was comfortable. There is quite hot weather on the island, which I loved, but you do need to be comfortable in the heat and sleeping with a fan at night.

OVERALL
I really enjoyed my time at the hostel and would recommend to anyone who loves the heat, beaches and is seeking a little break from the South American backpacker trail.
